She will only set on the eggs if she is broody. The eggs will only be fertile if she is with a male and some of the eggs may be fertile and some not. The longer she is with a male the more likely they will be fertile. You can always break open an egg to see if it is fertile. She will start sitting on the nest when she is through laying. Are you sure they are all her eggs? Usually other birds will lay in the same nest box. If you are sure they are her eggs mark them and daily check the eggs and you will see if she has layed more or maybe another bird has. If it had been 10 day and she is still not sitting on the nest and you want to hatch some eggs maybe you should consider putting the eggs in an incubator. If the eggs are fertile after 10 days they start to loose their viability. Not to say they won't hatch if they are fertile but the chances get slimmer as each day goes by. If she just started to lay the eggs are probably on the small side and it's not a good idea to hatch out small chicks. I would wait until the eggs get bigger. They will increase in size the longer she lays. I hope this helps you some.

Thought you'd like to see this since so many have asked how to tell if their eggs are fertilized. The first picture is an INfertile egg. The next two are fertile eggs at slightly different stages, but both freshly laid. Usually, you look for the bullseye/donut appearance, but there are different stages of development of even freshly laid eggs and the two last pictures demonstrate that. This is caused by cells in the center of the blastoderm dying off and leaving a cleared out area, making that bullseye appearance.

thankyou CMOM,,,i wasnt sure if she will finish laying,,then set on them,,,she is only about 7 months,,,,my wifes mum said they are big eggs,,iam going to check on them/her tomorrow,,,so i will see then,,,,and for her eggs being fertile,,i got her from a local pet store,,so do not know if she was with a male beforehand,,,she has been in her new place about 3 weeks now,,,have thai (hate the word muts) crosses,,of all types,,haha,as thai's just use for eggs and meat,so dont care about the breedage,,,so shes been there with my rir male for that time,,i will seperate them in the near future,as i dont want her breeding with just anything.

i know what to look for with the circle in the fertilised egg so thankyou.

apparently she is laying one egg a day,,as i said the other day,,i was told she was RIR,100%,but she looks like a red sex link,,golden comet,or something,,,then going about her normal day, what chickens do,faraging etc,,,is this normal for them if they have fertile eggs?,cheers all,,much respect for the help.

I am LOVING my Golden Sex Link pullet! She is only 5 weeks old but she is the dominant chick but not mean about it. Just in charge. Highest perch, first to try new things, etc. She's also our friendliest chick at 5 weeks!

SO glad that we know she's a pullet from the start so at least I don't have to worry about rehoming her (my other 4 chicks are a Barred Rock, a Black Australorp, and 2 English Orpingtons).

I've done a little reading and it sound like the Sex Link birds can have more medical issues because of the being bred to lay so prolifically. Can anyone give me some ideas of how long is typical for a Gold Sex Link to lay and to live?

I have some that are 5 plus years old. They still lay but skip more days so instead of getting and egg a day I may get 3 eggs a week.
