M- I think you have two pullets... the one on the right could possibly be plain cuckoo but will probably color up fine. A picture looking down at the back of the one on the right would tell for sure.

Very light are still Golden cuckoo. We have never thrown a silver (YET) although it is technically possible in our line it must be a deep recessive.

We see VERY occasional plain cuckoo (maybe 1 in 50 birds). Lots of folks have asked 'what is this yellow chick in my Marans hatch' well it is your prize cockerel!

True breeding Golden Cuckoos are pure for the barring gene, males homozygous B/B thus lighter than the hemizygous B/- hens. Dark males can be produced by having a heterozygous B/b+ bird, these however will not breed true. Think of the English way of breeding Barred Rocks light barred males B/B over Black b+/b+ hens to produce both dark cockerels and pullets. Pullets can never be light as are the cockerels as they can only ever have one barring gene.

I think these birds are just beautiful!

Although Krys was not able to furnish me with a picture of his/her actual birds I was sent this link to what he/she believes that a Golden Cuckoo Marans SHOULD look like... Unfortunately I have culled birds with this look prefering more gold... Live and learn... I guess that would be the advantage to having a great knowledge of chicken genetics. I still hope that y'all are happy with your chicks.

Here is the link so you can compare and maybe keep your own chicks that look like this. The site is in French so if you read French you can tell me what it says, Thanks!
