I purchased this sweet little thing today (along with a few other chicks) from our local farm supply company. They always keep a very nice selection of chickens, turkeys, and guineas. This chick was selected from a GLW group labeled all pullets. After getting it home (and comparing it to the other chicks) its comb looks very prominant. I know that different breeds have different combs, and they all come in at different times. Could this be a cockerel mixed in with the pullets?? Ihaven't any familiarity with Wyandottes. (and I already have two precious bantam cockerels - can't have any more with the present flock)

(perched on my daughter's leg - straight on shot of comb)

Its comb does look quite big. But unfortunately my only advice is to give it a couple of weeks. I have blue laced red Wyandottes, and I'm about to make a what gender post of my own because I have one that keeps me guessing. My Wyandottes are about 11 weeks old...good luck!

Might be a cockerel, my little GLW girls didn't have that much white in the downs in the chest, but it could be just different bloodline, and it was a while before their combs were that noticeable, again it could be bloodline, I'd give her/him a couple weeks more just to make certain

Hard to say, I agree-it's a little young. Ususally, if it's a boy, you will see the waddles start to develop early and the comb will be more pink/read than flesh colored.

Thanks, all. She (he) does have small little wattles that are pretty colorless, yet apparent whereas my Australorp of the same age doesn't show any signs of wattles. Again, I suppose it may just be the difference in breeds.
