When my chickens were 18 weeks old, I "borrowed" enough golf balls from Hubs to put one in each of our four nest boxes. Our first girl started laying and went right to the nest box. After a week, Hubs decided she knew what she needed to know so he took the golf balls back. The next egg was laid on the floor in front of the nest box and then one in the corner, under the roosts.
I got some wooden eggs from Michaels and put them out there along with one golf ball. The other seven girls have started to lay since then, but everyday there are at least four eggs in the nestbox with the golfball. Oh, and one of the pullets doesn't like the wooden egg and routinely takes it out of the box. One day I found it in the run!
