Gonna buy a log splitter

Depending on what size stuff you're starting with and what you plan to spend: I have a little electric 5 ton DR that's extremely powerful, portable, and sits right on my tailgate. I got it over 5 years ago for about $400, and it shipped free. It says it will handle up to a 10" log, but I've gotten through bigger stuff (18"?) with ease (if it's not terribly knotty or something really hard like Madrone). It's really quiet, too.

DH and I used to be able to split and stack a cord in maybe an hour, hour and 1/2 with one working the splitter and one handing off logs.

A friend of mine has it right now cuz I don't have a fireplace anymore (so I can't get a pic of it), but you can see it here:

Good Luck!

DH has a 15 year old MTD Yard Machine, 20 ton. It's over 15 years old, been a good one and still looks like new. We do all the firewood for the house and cabin. Even take it to friends to work on their wood supply.

my gandfeather has an 8 tonne wood spliter yard-man brand (candaian tire brand) cost him about 800 i think. there has only ever been to peaces of wood he could not split with it! Small ennough that it only takes me and him to lift it (ok well a third person is but two can lift it)

That is the same exact one we got from TS! We LOVE it!!! We only have a fireplace but I want a wood burning stove (WBS). Hubby won't go for it. I think he's a piro, he loves to see the fire in the fireplace. Plus he said WBS's make a mess. I don't even care about that, I care about the electric bill. The stupid fireplace only heats that one stupid room to a million degrees. I have to go to the basement to watch tv it gets so hot. He's nuts. I love him, but he's NUTS!

My friend heats with wood too and it really snows where he is at.

He is a total gear head and after much looking he got an electric splitter over the gas models. He loves the thing and it is nice and quiet too

I think it is a DR but will check on model #

I have one but rarely use it. If I have good stright red oak I can split it twice as fast with a maul. If I do get something that is hard to split I throw it off to the side and when I get a big pile of the hard stuff I'll fire up the splitter and do it all at once.

I have a Bolens (another MTD) 8 tons going on 4 years. I haven't had a problem with it "yet". It does what I need it to, and then some. I'll split and burn close to 4 - 5 cords year.
