somehow the idea of a gallon of blood sort of freaks me out... but I suppose if I donate every time I can, I'll be right up there too!

I wanted to give a gallon before I turn 20 and I think Im three donations away. B- is a not so common blood type

My hubby has been and blood donor for years now. I think he is close to the five gallon mark...I have to ask him to make sure.

Yes eat plenty and drink alot of fluids...happened to hubby one time and scared me! He passed out, vomited thru his nose while I was driving back home!

He was working and running pretty hard all weekend so that didn't help.

I used to donate, only three pints given until I was pregnant and now I have HPB and take statins for cholestrol. So no deal on that one. I have AB- blood.

My father had to have several pints of blood last month due to bleeding ulcers and was on comidin (sp) and he didn't know he was bleeding badly inside until he passed out. Now thanks to those blood donors, he is feeling just fine!

I can't now, due to my medical problems. I used to every time I was eligible. They loved to see me coming. I have an extremely high hemaglobin, meaning I could do a double donation - two units of RBCs taken off, with the plasma being returned to my body.

I've been a regular blood donor for about 40 years; somewhere in the 25 gallon range now. In addition to donating blood I've been a platelet donor since my niece had to have a bone marrow transplant years ago. Please consider platelet donation if you are somewhere that they can do it. It takes about two hours, just enough time to watch a movie on the DVD players they usually have to platelet donors. I consider it a reasonable way to spend two hours watching a movie while reclining with my feet propped up!

BTW, I have high blood pressure, take meds for that and also am on statin drugs. Neither of those disqualifies me from donating. They have a list of medications you can check to see if you are on anything which would take you out of the donor pool. It's a great way to give; please check it out and donate if you can.

my hemoglobin was 12.4, 12.5 is the low cut off... so they tested the other hand, and I was 12.9... so i did it! I didn't get real dizzy or anything, and the juice was nice. I'm too short )5'2") to do a double donation, and my local donation center is only taking AB- platelet/plasma donations... It does't take so long, and the people are much better than any nurses I've ever had draw blood. I'm kind of grossed out by blood, and it was totally fine, i just didn' look! Call 1-800-Give Life to set up an appt!

Congratulations, chickensducks&agoose, you did a great thing! I fight the hemoglobin issue all the time too; sometimes I'm high enough and sometimes not, but I keep trying and more often that not, it works. Good for you!!!!

My own problem is I have one nurse who can stick me with NO pain. Others would just try to grind to find the vein and its painful!

I get very light headed when I donate. As long I stay reclined, I'm fine.

I am glad I had past the few gallons mark before I became unable to give blood. I lived in the UK during the first Mad Cow scare and therefore cannot give anymore. I miss the calls.

Sigh.
