I got a call tonight for a local drive. I'm already scheduled in August so I had to turn it down. Giving blood is a hoot. I go in and pretend to be terrified of needles and whine a lot. Then I do my best to get everyone on the bus laughing their butts off. Back on Good Friday the phlebotomist looked at me and said "remember who's holding the needle, OK?". I promptly said OW!!! and he wasn't even sticking me yet. I especially like the people's reactions when I pull away on my motorcycle after giving blood too. I'm 195 and bleed a pint in under 2 minutes. Not even a headrush to show for it.

If you can give, please give.

I don't bleed so fast. I also get kind of fuzzy feeling, especially if I don't hydrate/eat enough. Keep bleeding for the Red Cross PC, and wear a helmet. If you don't wear a helmet, be sure you've got your organ donor card filled out

Most of the time don't wear a helmet but that's for another thread. I am absolutely 100% an organ donor!!! If I fall and hit my head I can save a few lives. Kinda weird but true.

I worked in a local blood bank lab for a few years, still donate when I'm not deferred for pregnancy or low iron. I've gotten the calls saying 'we need blood/plasma/platelets STAT' so I know it really does save a lot of lives. Thanks to all who donate or at least try to

Women often have a low iron problem; try to eat iron-rich foods the week before you donate or take a supplement, that should do the trick.

SallyF, 25 gallons, WOW!

Hubby also does the plasma too. Nothing to it, he says!

He is now signing up for bone marrow match, had the mailing tests done and waiting for the responses.

And yes both of us are organ donors. I had to laugh at FIL about those "vampires" will bleed us dry when blood donating and "how they would hack our bodies to pieces when donating organs". Such mentality!

i used to give every 8 weeks when i was a teenager. i'd actually ride my bike to and from the blood bank. because of piercings and tattoos i didn't donate for a long time, and now my meds prevent me. i always felt it was kind of cleansing, in addition to helping those in need; it gave my bod a chance to rejuvenate.
