I have three hens (of which one is still junior) that won't hatch their eggs. I have tried everything to try to get them broody, but even when they make nests, they aren't able to incubate them to term. They start sitting on their eggs, and they are very attentive and careful for the first two weeks and last few days, but in between they lose interest and let their eggs chill/die. All of them were raised by me in the house, so I was wondering if them having no contact with their mothers and not having been raised like ducks had something to do with it? I also have a drake who was raised alone in the house, so he didn't know that he was a duck until he was several months old. He was mortified of other ducks until I managed to integrate him into my flock, and since he's grown into my biggest drake. The issue is, he won't mate with my hens. Several times I have picked him up now and he tries to mount my arm. Is there any chance that I'm going to get babies from him?

My other question is, what are some good breeds that brood well? I need broody hens because I'm barely able to keep up with incubating eggs and raising the ducklings while dealing with my other plans.

An excellent broody duck is a Muscovy.

What breeds of ducks do you have because a lot of breeds have had the broodiness breed out in place of egg production. There is always an exception but alot of ducks will start but don't finish. Muscovy since they are not Mallard derived and haven't had the gene pool screwed up will brood hatch and make excellent mamas.
