You should also check your local feed store if you are planning on purchasing in spring anyway. I am pretty sure that they get their chicks from Meyers or a similiar company and they are usually vaccinated. Typically they have a few common breeds available and you can pick and choose which ones you want. Thats what we did with our first bunch. It was easy because everything we needed was right there.

Like most animals it really the pet owner that makes any pet a GOOD BREED. Lots of touching and loves and hand feeding plus time spent and involvement makes a friendly warm and nice breed. That is of course you are not on a mission for MEAT BIRDS or something specific like that.

I have both..and I can't tell you which ones are friendlier...they're always jumping in my lap or on my shoulder, or following me around. I also have Wyandottes, and EE's which are somewhat friendly, and White Rock/RIR crosses, which are not friendly at all.

This is true. I have Barred Rocks and they are like lil dogs but mine were raised from day old chicks I got at my feed store in my home with constant holding, petting and spoiling.

I have a friend who has Buff Orps that they raised in a brooder in the coop and they gave lil handling or attention to and they are all friendly but flighty. They will come near you but will not let you easily touch them. You have to corner them and catch them to hold them for any reason.

It is all in how they raised and how much they were handled as chicks.....

I have bought adult, juvi and day old chickens and had the best experience with day old chicks...... So I recommend going that route. I also have had good luck with shipping from hatcheries and from my feed store. I know every feed store around here carries both breeds of chicks as they are 2 of the most common ones so if you are waiting until spring then your local feed store would be your best bet for buying the chicks with the best hope for accurate sexing..... If you are wanting them now then I used Idea Poultry in the past and have never had a doa or lost any chicks at all from them and some of what I have gotten in the past actually turned out to be very high quality chicks worth showing! They also do small orders of 3 I believe.

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Urg! I need to ignore this thread! Now I want them NOW!!! Lol.

Just got an Ameraucana, Wellsummer, Astralorp and Naked Neck. So far, the Wellsummer and Astralorp seem to be the sweetest. But they are all friendly. The Ameraucana is a little flighty and she bosses around the other chicks (talk about the pecking order in action). But the little ones still love her and follow her everywhere. So fun to watch them in action. Will be interesting to see how their personalities develop as they get older.
