Since we have to find a new home for our Buff Orpington rooster, we would like to get a hen of the same breed. I found someone local that has some for sell and are only about 26 wks old so laying soon if not already. They have them priced at $30, is that good? Are there any things I should look for or be concerned about?

Roosters are hard to rehome in some areas. I think I hatched 3 of the 3 chicks and unfortunately I'll have to place an add for free on CL.:(. I'll miss them terribly. I'm not letting them go until they start to crow or show aggression.

5-10$ seems like a fair price. Our farm store sells them for $10.

$25 for a point of lay purebred hen seems OK to me. $30 is getting up there, but it's the one you want and it's available now. Also, prices vary by location.

I see free hens all the time, but they are always spent hens, at the end of their laying life.

You'd be better off to put the rooster into your own freezer. He'll make nice chicken and dumplings and a meal for your family instead of having to give him away.

If the roster wins a nice prize at an APA sanctioned show, you could probably get $25-$50 for him (depending upon what prize he won). But you didn't mention anything about being exhibition quality.
