I have quite a few Buff Orpingtons already - I like how they are larger, lay a good amount of eggs, can go broody, and handle the cold well - I don't like that the heat can sometimes be an issue. Their docility doesn't matter much to me, though it is nice. =)

What other breeds are good like this - larger, hardy, and good layers?

Thanks!

Ameraucanas, Delawares and Rocks are good for all the reasons you mention. I have had all of these breeds for many years, and they are very compatible with Orpingtons in a flock, too.

I should note that my Ameraucanas don't go broody at all, my Delawares go broody and raise chicks, but most Delawares do not. The Rocks do go broody, and they do have the reputation for it.
