GOODBYE GUMBO

I better start watching for eggs instead of waiting for a crow

Well...I see what looks like saddle feathers coming in on the second batch of pics of him/her...I'm stumped

...maybe he isn't has old as you think?...I have a 5 month old black orp that has not dared crow yet...I still don't see any signs of spurs developing...looks like one of those crow or egg deals to me...I give up....Thats my thoughts and I'm sticking to them...LOL

If I had to wage money on it, I'd say Gumbo is an early developing hen.

Some hens will have those little bumps were the roosters develop spurs. However, he/she does have somewhat of a rooster-like stance and what looks like to be almost-but-not-quite pointy feathers around the neck and saddle area, so there is also a possibility that Gumbo is an hemporphidite (sp?), which in human terms, means both male and female, but in chicken terms, pretty much means neither male or female (won't crow and won't lay eggs).

Even if it's a hen, you may not get eggs until next spring because the weather is cooling down. If it does end up a rooster, you should get crowing in the next couple of months.

The pullets with him are only 14 wks. Gumbo is a Buff Rock, since he has yellow legs, the others are BO pullets and one cockerel amongst them. Gumbo is at least 6 months old. He was given to me by a woman that said she had gotten him from a man back in the spring. I hope he is not a he/she.
