GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

I love these pics of nice, clean, new, fresh barns and nesting areas. I'd have to take a pic in the first hour or so, to avoid having mud - or worse - on everything. Well, maybe the first day in the barn.

Lol, why do you think I posted a pic of the nest boxes when I first made them? Haha!

Now, a year later, they are covered in poop and/or poop stains! My silkies can't get on the actual roost bar, so they sleep on top of those nests. But the girls still use them for eggs, so whatever works!

Solarpowered, usually the larger sized goslings with big personalities are boys. Those are the ones I am typically drawn to as well. Often I have more accurately determined male gender by appearance/personality than by vent sexing. Spirit is a perfect example. He was vent sexed three times by two different vets. All three times they said female. But I knew he was a boy and had the dna testing done to confirm it.

So true. I can see the differences in their personalities. I've done that with silkies as well.

Funny you mention that about silkies. I first got silkies last year as hatching eggs. The entire dozen hatched, but predators got to all except two of the chicks (my fault).

At about 6 to 8 weeks, one got noticably larger than the other. I showed pics and asked around. Everyone said they were the same gender, even with the size difference, and likely both male.

But I knew something was different. I knew they were different, and that difference in size meant something. It was the very first silkies I had ever owned, so I had no experience with them. But somehow I knew.

Today I have a beautiful white silkie rooster who crows louder than everyone else and... a show-worthy white silkie hen!

So sometimes, owner knows best, even if we don't know what we're doing!

Wow! That's a great clean house. I won't show those pics to my birds, lest they get jealous!

Do geese ever nest off the ground? I have a bank of nesting boxes about 1.5 feet off the ground with a roosting bar in front. The ducks and chickens seem to be drawn to them, but the one goose who has nested has put hers on the ground under a tree. Even in the snow, she took the time to lay in the same spot, burying the eggs under the dirt under the snow.
