GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

funny story today I was of course looking for mire buffgeese eggs around the property ( I found none today although one yesterday ) anyway so while sitting by the pond daddies boy gander decides to come and lay in my lap (this is a large buff goose very large much larger than the average male buff goose since th other two boys of the patch are much small and fully grown ) and I'm sitting there like , "okay your gonna crush my legs . "

Your gander just wanted to be next to you on your lap!!! Is it warmer there? Because if it was here they would get in my lap to warm up at 6 degrees!

Thanks anyway. Just got back from the store with polyvisol, vit E, vit B complex, and selenium... Read that it's a magic mix for this condition.. She's SOO much bigger than the rest of the goslings, I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.. We'll see.
Since you are treating asap I think she'll be fine. Go by what you have read since you have probably seen the dosage to treat.

The first duck I hatched got wry neck around day 7. I fed her a drop of polyvisol (without iron) coated on chopped greens 3x daily. It cleared up 100% after a week.

By the way..... the way you describe your gosling.... I'd bet money she is a boy.

My little girl's neck is bent. It's developed within the last 2 hours or so since she's been hanging in her tub here next to me while I do school work. She is eating, drinking, and running after me just fine.. But there is a definite curve to the neck that wasn't there before. Wry neck keeps coming up when I search it... Anyone know if it's fixable and how? I'm seeing stuff about a brace? She's been having save a chick elecrolites for days now... Going to get other vitamins in the morning.. She's been having romane, kale, and turnip greens for 2 days too. And grit.

Along with the vitamin treatment I would also recommend massaging the neck as often as you can and stretching it out and doing some "OT" on it. I had a little gosling do this a few years back and gave her away to a friend. She massaged her neck and gave vitamins and she was fine after a few days.

Yes, we're crushing the sil and B pills, popping an E and mixing it all together with some save a chick electrolites. I'm ripping up little pieces of different greens and putting them in the drink so she's more inclined to drink it all faster. Thank you! We were at wally world within the hour of noticing it, all fingers crossed here.

I got the poly too, but am nervous about mixing it with the other concoction. I've read a couple things that say the Vit A could stop the E from absorbing. Any experience with this by chance? You think it would be ok to alternate? Maybe the mixture in the morning, poly mid day, then mix at night? What makes you think it's a boy? It's been a question lately as a matter of fact! She's been pecking at the bin every time one of the cats or the dog comes nearby. She's... spunky to say the least. The cats are very docile, but any time they come up when she's hanging out on a blanket with me she is fast to "defend" herself. We sexed others and were able to see a penis, we did her a couple of times and never did though, but that's not very reliable! I have a 90 pound dog for goodness sake.. And this pint sized thing doesn't think twice about pecking as his nose!!

She's usually on my lap most of the day as I do school work so I've been massaging a lot. I mean, I'm really just petting a little heavier really. I'm afraid I'll hurt her is I do much else. I'm going to increase bath times to see if she'll dive under water and stretch out.

Thank you guys very much. I was having a panic last night and spent some time crying. I've gotten quite attached to this little thing already. Amazingly enough, the big sideways lump that was the base of her neck, and the stark bend of the length of her neck looks better. This mixture is AMAZING. There is still an S curve, but what looked like swelling is gone. I'm keeping at it until it's all gone, and a little after too! I checked everyone else, and no one has it.

I'm wondering if bigger birds are more susceptible to this kind of thing? I'm almost sure she's mixed with Embden.. She's SO much bigger than anyone else.

This might sound dumb, but I've heard some conflicting advice. Do I need to worm and powder for lice and mites? How do you do it? I have tried looking, but it's near impossible with all that down.

I've never powdered my waterfowl for lice/mites and have never seen any on my ducks or geese. I think they're in the water too much for lice and mites to want to stay on them.
