Hello All!
I have a quick question, and it has probably been answered elsewhere in this thread, but I honestly don't have time to go back through over 2K posts to try to find my answer! I am hatching out 3 goose eggs for a friend, who's poor mama Embden goose got snatched by a predator right as she was getting ready to start setting. She also has some other goose breeds, but not sure what they are....
Anyway....do different breeds of geese have different incubation times? This is the end of day 30, and the Embden egg is zipping now. The other two smaller eggs haven't even pipped internally yet although they are moving.
I only have experience with chicken eggs, so I have no idea what to expect from these guys. Also, I have noticed that these goslings don't get in a hurry for anyone! lol The Embden that is hatching now has been working on hatching for 3 DAYS!! From internal pip on Friday to zipping now on Monday night.....sheesh, and I thought chicks were slow!

yup.. they are trying to get your babiesI have a pair of Sebs that are 2 years old, and now 2 pair of goslings I got from a hatchery. They cheep a lot during the day, and now the older pair stands next to the pen all day. They hiss at me when I go back to the pen. Do they want the babies (3 weeks old)? Ive never had Mrs. Goose hiss at me til now, LOL
I'd give them a chance at raising them Geese are wonderful parents and are good at adoptions too. Thanks, psue. Would they hurt them?
Did you try?Wow!
What do you do with the adults? the only problem you may have with the chickens is the chickens getting hurt if they get to close to the babiesLOL. I'm a little nervous about it. I did take one out today and hold it, and the older pair were determined to hiss and bite me but did not aim at the "child".
So I'll give it a try again tomorrow. But I imagine I would have to separate them from the chickens? Or, the babies are almost the size of a normal chicken, but they peep and I worry about hawks, which I've not had a problem with.
Can you advise me on what kind of set up I should do? A pen? Covered pen? Loose in the back yard? With or without chickens?
