GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Okay, I would not believe this if my husband and I didn't watch this. The older couple has been separated at night. For a few nights he was by himself but the pens share a wall. The next day he comes out and it's the same thing, he won't let her come over for food.

Today I thought it was odd that I was hearing "growling"- loud. We go out and Sophie (6 months old) has the rotten male by the neck. She was chasing him and nipping him. Hubby then found him hovering in a corner "playing dead". The "don't touch me " male let my husband pick him up and pet him. Now, the tables are turned and she is helping herself to food and water with her 3 others she grew up with. He is now not permitted to look at her or get closer. And no, I don't feel sorry for him.
A lesson to be learned by any abusing male ... bird or otherwise...Good for Sophie and at only 6 months.

They were marked from the hatchery with legbands. She basically stays with Ronald, a big Buff. But nothing is guaranteed, right? I will have to watch them more. I know Ronald and the other male do stand tall most of the time.

Anything's possible, right? Is there any way to tell? Would pictures help?

Hi All!

I have a new goose name Angel (the white & grey one), that's approx 1-2 years old. She's half African and half Embden and has totally fallen in love with my Embden Gander "Em". Em is young at 8 months old. I was wondering how old are ganders when they begin to mate? The female has actually tried to show him, got on his back yesterday, but he really doesn't seem to care and She won't leave him alone! I can understand why, he is a real sweetheart and who wouldn't fall in love with those baby blues! ;) They seem to be bonding and go off a lot on their own, which is so cool to watch two lovely geese fall in love! Oh, and of course Gabby is always first to be in the picture.. Lol :love

Ps: Update on Gabby.. As you may have read, Gabby (Chinese goose) ate a nylon :barnierope about 4 weeks ago. she is doing ok, as you can see in the picture but is still blocked up.. She has not passed the rope yet and I truly doubt she will now. She isn't 100%, but is eating and does pass small amounts of "stuff", but I'm still worried she is slowly loosing weight. I'm thinking of a supplemental diet to get more calories into her.. Any recommendations?

Thx again! Diane

Beautiful geese and Congrats on the new girl. I would think soon you'll see some actions from your young gander, Angel will be persistent until Em gets it right.

As for Gabby can you take her to a vet for xrays to see where the rope is? maybe you have contact with a local vet that may know of someone who does low cost or no cost veterinary care for farm animals, some people can get care at teaching schools. Have you tried mixing in some olive oil into her feed?Bless her heart she looks full of personality . Some use baby bird food to help a sick or injured duck so you might look into that. It has alot of calories.

Is anyone else seeing laying already?

Went out this morning and found a great big goose egg in the middle of the stall the geese spend the night in (2m, 2f sebastapols). I wasn't expecting this for atleast another month - last year they were much later.

Anyone have any experience with early laying like this? Is she going to be full into the swing of things, or is it possible she just lays a couple and starts up later?

Virginia Tech has a pretty decent Veterinary medicine program. They are located in Blacksburg but they have a satellite campus in Leesburg which is in Northern Virginia. You might give them a call and just see if they can do anything for Gabby. If it has been four weeks she may be o.k. but it would not hurt to check. I don't know how long the rope was but there is the chance of it getting twisted around something and causing more serious problems in the future. Your geese are lovely but Gabby takes the cake on curiosity. She almost looks like a cartoon character that you PhotoShopped in.

CrazyTalk. I have three Pomeranians currently laying. Don't understand why. Last season they started laying in Feb. Much too early for Ohio as Nov. is much too late. As they are a year older now, they are laying more eggs than in previous layings. They are free range birds that come into the hen house every evening so they have complete access to all the laying mash they want.I am selling eggs on Ebay as I have no desire to raise winter goslings.
