GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

So I've not been on here since summer, but I thought I would ask my question again, now that there are some active southern hemisphere folks on this thread.

My babies (ducks and geese) get so excited when I refill their water that they run around in circles like a school of fish. My husband calls it "tunaing." The strange part is that they always go in a clockwise direction. Do birds south of the equator tuna in a counter-clockwise direction? Inquiring minds want to know.

I´ve never noticed mine going around in circles...only straight toward the food!

Little wings outstretched and...RUN!

Also, I have geese for the fist time this winter (hatched them last spring) and was wondering when I need to be ready for breeding season.
Most likely this coming year . My goose was 9months old this past Jan when her and gander started mating. you'll notice change in behavior in your ganders first.

Im still waiting on my Toulouse pair to breed they were hatched mid June 2012. I know i have one of each and i got nothing this last spring but also heard that late season hatched goslings usually dont lay until their second spring so fingers crossed. My others are showing signs of interest even the goslings hatched this past spring so it wont be long.

That´s good for the toulouse...they´re more ready at an older age. I´m sure they´ll do fine this coming year. I took all the eggs away from my geese the first year and the second year they laid bigger eggs, worth sitting on. I got nice sized goslings.

I hope to acquire some ganders prior to mating season, so I'm wondering what time of year (Jan? April?) they normally get started.

Mine start the last week of February, has never failed for the past 7 or so years. You would probably want to get ganders in January so the birds can bond a bit before breeding season. Not absolutely necessary but a recommendation.

I've still have lots of sebbie ganders available now.

My Africans start laying in the 2nd week of February and my dewlaps start the 1st week of March. X2 on getting gander sooner rather than later so they can bond before breeding season begins.

What do you already have?

I have a hodge podge. Embdens, Embden/Chinese, Toulouse, and one tufted Roman/Sebbie mixed gander. I have to do some flock thinning, as I have siblings currently running together, so I have to do some sexing and lose most of the boys to avoid inbreeding. I had hopes to do some swapping, but then got a virus in the fall and didn't allow any birds to leave the property. So I'm afraid that I have to butcher rather than rehome.
