GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

i have a few geese with a gander in there i have 1 goose that i know of that is laying and has decided to keep her eggs and went broody so we have decided to leave her be with them to see what the outcome will be. my question is shes started sitting on them for 1st egg she now has 5 in there am i now going to get staggered hatching (assuming they are fertile) and how long is the incubation period what feed do i put down for the gosling when they arrive? need a fair bit of info (i am reading and trying to find things out) as im new to hatching but successfully hated 2 Silkie Shamo chicks who are thriving

Congrats! Do you plan to pick up her eggs this year?
I left this one hoping she'll lay in Her house not the ducks. I'll let her lay some and check fertility by opening them, how many should she lay before I check to see if they are fertile. If they aren't J, I'll let you know for sure.

Was she sitting on the first egg 24/7 with just a break for food and water? when my goose starting laying last year when she would lay she'd sit on the egg at night but not during the day except when she was laying another egg, usually they don't start brooding 24/7 till they have what they consider a nest full then all the eggs begin incubating at one time then you wait 28-30 days.
You'll have to keep a close eye on her when hatching begins to make sure she is okay with hatching and she is taking care of the goslings. But hopefully she'll be a good mama and your gander will be a good papa goose. Feed can be chick starter crumble or all flock crumbles if you decided to use the chick starter you'll probably need to use niacin in the gosling water right off because the chick starter doesn't have the amount of niacin water fowl need to prevent lameness. Please keep us updated on everything and good luck! and

shes been on them 24/7 and so far from what im reading doing all the right things shes very protective of the eggs she has 5 now only coming off to eat and drink then shes straight back to them we cant get too near her as soon as she sees you shes hissing at you now and would attack if you werent careful as where before the egg laying started she would let you pet her but no chance of that now
Niacin not heard of that is it available in the UK? I will have to look into that and make sure i have it in i always have chick started in.

everytime i go to check on her shes on the eggs

hopefully all being well i should see the start of goslings around 19th-21st March then seeing as shes been sitting from day 1

Thanks for the welcome :)

Be sure when you go to buy niacin or Brewers yeast forgot to tell you about that one another from of niacin[B3] both can probably be ordered on line if you can't find them, just be sure to get plain niacin not time released or flush free. and start out at 100megs for newly hatched goslings. the Brewers yeast can be sprinkled onto the top of feed for them. 1/2 Tab to 1/2 cup of feed to begin with They will need to stay on the niacin/brewers yeast till around 10 weeks old. Keep us updated please.

What I was referring to is when they begin to hatch sometimes the goose can get confused [not understanding whats going on] so you want to make sure she is keeping the gosling under her and warm and not pushing them or the eggs away from her or hurting them, it doesn't happen alot but it does happen so just keeping an eye on things is just best. Very excited for you keep us updated.

had eggs by this time last year.

Missy laid her first egg of the year this morning, exactly one week after mating started, and a whopper too. I had to take it out of the duck house and put it in the goose house hoping she'll go in their own house to lay. Poor Sam was like an expectant father standing over her being so supportive.

Hey MLyd, I think you remember the hatchling that one of my geese nibbled too much and it died. First time mum. Too keen. And another one that i took the gosling away because she was frightened of it! Alien being coming out of her precious egg! First time mum. Scared stiff! haha. But they both adopted the goslings back again, and have been great mums since.

Hi AlbaEire. Did you take any of her eggs to start with? If so, it could be that she went broody after laying a number of them, but then the other geese could also be laying in the same nest, as it´s very odd for a goose to go broody and still be laying. Would that make sense?
And MLyd´s advice is spot-on for gozzies.

p.s. I´m sure you don´t hate your silkies.
