So I have been reading about raising geese and found that they should not be raised with ducks or they do not behave like proper geese. True?

Lucy laid 3 eggs and quit, and 2 of the eggs were frozen and cracked. The other egg is developing in the incubator and will be a lone gosling if it makes it. If I need more goslings for company I will have to order a few for the hatch week. It is too cold here to put a hatchling outside and Lucy is only a year old and has not raised any babies yet. I'm afraid she wouldn't know what to do if I just surprised her with a baby.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

My ducks love my geese and my geese love my ducks. They were hatched and brooded together and I think they really do well together. I like to think the geese protect the ducks. The one thing that I have noticed is that my 4 anconas, who were raised most closely with geese, think they are geese and don't really associate with the other ducks. But I haven't noticed any geese thinking they are ducks. I hope this helps. Here they are getting along nicely.

Eggs have been disappearing from all of the goose nests and some of the duck nests. I finally caught (and confined) the turkey hen who was eating some of the goose eggs in the act, but put out a few live traps to see what else might be bothering them. I put the remaining 3 goose eggs in the trap next to the nest overnight to see what it might catch. The eggs were still there in the morning, but before I had time to disarm the trap, mama goose had gone in there to retrieve her eggs and got caught in the closed trap. My brother had to go let her out, and she was ruffled, to say the least. Her eggs were returned to her, but not without much scorn on her part.

He went to check the other nests to find them already occupied by grouchy mamas who hissed at him. After finishing up the rounds, he returned to check the first nest, only to be hissed at again. I told him that his Indian name should be "Hated by geese."

I really hope that no more eggs disappear as it distresses the geese and doesn't make me too happy, either.

Thanks for the answer, Daisy. I didn't realize the geese I bought last year were so feral and unsocialized and I wanted to hand raise their offspring to get friendlier birds. My pekin trio is also terrified of people and I am hatching some of their eggs at the same time.

The muscovies are so underfoot I can hardly walk. Got those at 3 days old, or they were hatched here, and brooded in the house.

I'm trying to get the hang of incubating waterfowl eggs before I spend the money on hatching eggs.

One thing is sure, though, your baby goose will definitely to so much happier with afriend. Could be gosling (ideal), or a duckling. Do you have ducklings in the incubator too?

Yes, I have 3 muscovy eggs, and 9 pekin in with the goose egg. Set on different days so they should all hatch out about the same time. I was in a rush to do something because I discovered Lucy's eggs when we had a nice day and I could finally get the 6 inches of frozen yuck out of the doghouse. By that evening it was below freezing again and the geese were still all upset that I invaded their nest, so I brought the one uncracked egg in and tried to save it.

I stuffed about 8 inches of clean straw in the nest house and left her a pile of grassy second cutting to construct a new nest. They are hanging out over in that corner and I see some depressions where she is trying it out, so I hope to see some more eggs that I can let her brood now that it is getting warmer out. They are both so frightened when I go in the pen. Buster is just beside himself trying to protect Lucy and is trembling as he hisses. I move slow and talk softly when I feed, water, and add clean bedding. He is a little better since it got warm enough I can sit down in the corner and be still for a while. He stops hissing and creeps closer and is talking to me a little bit.

Years ago (40+) I had geese and they were such friendly pets. I hope if I hatch they will grow up liking humans better than their parents do. Lucky they are on the small side for embdens (hatchery stock).

I gave my goslings to my broody muscovy. While my others are finishing hatching in the incubator. I couldn't keep their membranes moist enough. They key drying out. So I made sure that they wouldn't now. I have it full of water now! Lol!
