GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

I accidentally fed my African gosling chick starter medicated feed not realizing it would poisen him and he is weezing and what appears to be chokinghe will not drink water and I was wondering if there is anything I can do I am really woried about him and also what can I feed him

He needs to drink water when he feeds. It's very critical to waterfowl when they eat dry foods.

the chick starter would not cause that problem. I believe you should post a thread about this in the emergency forum.

I have a question...here is the story.

I just hatched 3 mallard ducklings yesterday that had been given to me. So cute.

Today when I checked my female gooses nest I saw a tiny air hole on one of the eggs and at least one egg talked back to me when I talked to them.

Anyway I was hoping the ducklings would be able to grow for a few days and I would be able to put the ducklings with the goslings, for the two parent geese to take care of them as well. I know the size difference will be pretty big, which was why I was hoping the ducklings would have a few days growth before the goslings hatched but looks like they are all going to be within 48 hours of each other. Possibly less time then that.

Any reason I should not put the ducklings with the goslings (after they hatch of course) for the geese to take care of them? When to do so? These are first time parents I am talking about and they are Pilgrims.

Can't hurt to try, if it doesn't work just put the ducklings back in the brooder, hopefully the geese will accept them. They do love babies.

I think the greatest difficulty would be for the ducklings to imprint on the goose. So best to do it while she´s still sitting tight and has at least one strong gosling under her. A bit iffy as it´s her first time. Hopefully she´s a goose that sits light on her babies. Do it the earliest possible, so the ducklings imprint, because she won´t likely be running after them, at least, not at first.. They need to learn to go to her. I hope your goslings hatch successfully. Keep a close eye, and if it doesn´t work out, then just rear them as you were obviously going to do.

Thanks both of you. I currently have 7 goslings hatched (4 female and 3 male) and she is still sitting on them and the remaining 6 eggs. I saw one of the eggs had an air hole. Another might be bad. It has a long crack going up and down. I didn't see that crack before so maybe its just an odd hatching crack? It doesn't really look right to me though. The rest I didn't get enough of a look at to really tell. Both parents are fine with me reaching in the nest and touching the babies but I hate to try to reach under her to actually pull out an egg so I am only seeing them when she stands up for a second or two. It does mean that I can't be sure on how the rest of the eggs are doing though. Sort of frustrating and exciting at the same time.

I will see how it goes putting one duckling under her at a time. Just take it slow and see if it works. I'm hoping not to have to keep them in the brooder but if they don't want to stay with her then I can put them back in the house. So far she looks pretty careful sitting. Time will tell. I really hope she does well but if not I know she still needs to learn the process. It would be really handy to have the geese be willing to raise the babies instead of me though. My gander keeps going over and looking at the goslings and his mate. He also hissed at me today and yesterday. Very not like him to do that. I take it as a sign that he is wanting to protect them so that is good. He was fine once I was there a minute. I am thinking he should be a good dad. He even stood by me watching as I held one in my hand right against the mothers body for a minute. Both parents completely calm and happy. The mother grooming the gosling in my hand for a few seconds. Anyway I am leaving them alone now but it was cool to see and touch them. This is such a sweet breed. I really can't say enough how nice Pilgrims are.
