GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Yes, I was wondering the same thing, if Ganders are more outgoing? My new goose Angel is a huge hisser and I am still trying to get her to mellow out. She protects "Em" all the time and charges my dachshunds with wings out every chance she can.. Em, my Embden gander is real mellow.. He is sweet but doesn't like to be touched, never seen him be aggressive at all. Gabby, well she is the character :yiipchick always wanting to know what I'm doing and is such a joy to own! I never knew how much fun it is to own a goose, as everyone thinks they are so mean.. You just got to let them know who's in charge and everyone gets along :highfive:

Sounds like Angel might be a gander but of course hissing is normal from both genders, and going after the dogs, well all 4 of mine go after my dachshunds. My gander will be the one to come up to me and get between me and his girls the girls are usually the ones that stand off at a distance and watch what's going on. My Buff is the only one of the girls that will come close and visit but doesn't want me to touch her.

Of my two Buff's, the gander is, without a doubt, the more demonstrative of the two! He's always the first one to approach me, whereas Gabby (my goose's name also
highfive.gif
), will kind of hang around the fringes until she believes that it's 'safe' and that there are no hidden 'surprises' that will jump out and 'get' her...lol !!! It's not so much that she's afraid per se, just more of an introvert than Gus is I guess. Although, there have been times when we've chuckled about her having some feline blood in her, she acts like such a scaredy cat sometimes...lol !!! What I find interesting is their tag-team approach to guest intrusions...Gabby will sound the alarm and Gus will offer a challenge, his head down and neck outstretched, which is usually more than enough to thwart any would be contenders notion of whose property it really is !!!

They do have a way don't they, and my goose Missy is what I call scardy goose instead of cat.
The other day my son who is 5'10" wanted to borrow the ladder and he had to go inside where the geese were laying down, Well he starts inside the gate and my gander stood up and challenged him, I told him not to let him intimidate him but I had to come to his rescue Sammy would not move out of the way.lol it was so funny to see my grown son afraid of my goose. [little does he know they may be his one day]

oh Sammy bit him on the butt once too.

You know I have my three geese that are truly treasures to me. But, your story about your son reminded me...When I was just a kid, probably about 9 or 10, we were living with my Grandparents on their farm outside Turlock, CA. I rode the bus to and from school. It would pick me up in front of their house and let me off in the afternoon in the same spot. Their front gate had a latch that, no matter how careful I was, made a funny clicking sound when opened and closed. They had a goose, probably an Embden, I am not sure but it was really big...to me then, something like 10 feet tall and weighing about a thousand pounds. When it heard that gate latch it would come running around the house and I would take off running for the front door. My grandmother would stand in the living room watching this all through the window and laughing her head off. Everyday for months I got a nip on the butt. When I decided to try and raise geest this time (at 66 years old) that memory almost stopped me. I am sure glad I went ahead though because now I have three of the finest and best looking geese around.

Too bad there isn't a smilie face for getting bit in the butt by a goose...I would insert it here if there was.

That made me laugh too, so cute. I think all of us probably can tell a story about encounters with geese some where in our lives I had one, Just think of the joy we would have missed out on if we had let those times scare us off of getting any.

I have a few fertile Pomeranian goose eggs for sale. they are $5 each and will ship anywhere in continental U.S. Buyer must pay priority mail fee. These are from very nice birds. The gray Poms and buff Poms run together so you probably will get a few of each. Had 4 hens laying, down to 2 as the other 2 have gone broody. PM me if interested.

We have 2 large white geese (no idea what breed) Gerald and Geraldine. They free range in our field with the chickens and sheep all day.

Gerald has a bit of a "thing" about the sheep, who until recently were not remotely interested in him kicking off at them, they just used to look up from grazing as if to say" do shut up!"

But this all changed about 2 months ago when Gerald decided he was actually going to grab hold of the wool just by their ears! He will not let go and it gets quite scary watching him get thrown around by a full grown sheep. Eventually he lets go and has to beat a hasty retreat as the sheep are fed up with him by now and we have seen our ram (who is now in the freezer, but that's another story) pummel Gerald in to a fence. Wings flapping ,feathers flying etc.

I was a bit worried about it until I saw that when Gerald was released from this "situation" he still shouted his head off as he ran over to Geraldine as if for all the world he was saying" there! that taught that b****y sheep didn't it woman!!). he's fine and still continues to harass the sheep.

The only person Gerald won't go near is my partner. Brian really does not like being hissed at and won't tolerate something that he would rather eat having a go at him! So, it's a bit of a stand off between them and is very funny when Brian sometimes puts them away at night and Gerald runs in the opposite direction. Try and visualise a man and a goose running around a field at dusk shouting at each other.

Don't worry, Gerald is quite chilled with me and I really love him so no harm will come to him or Geraldine.

That's hilarious, but typical of ganders. I have Embden gander who is quite large and white and he never learns but mostly it's me he has a go at. When he does I just lay him on the ground on his belly just like I have seen my drake do yes my Muscovy drake has brought my gander under submission, but with me My gander has to be reminded almost daily I will not tolerate being bitten. And yep they do like to brag when they think they have won. lol
Please post pics of Gerald and Geraldine I'd love to see them. My gander has gone after the dogs too so he isn't allowed to be alone with them any more they hate him now.
