WWFF Update (weird water fowl family)

My goose finally started to sit on Friday, a week exactly after the gander started to sit. Now they are both sitting together. She shoves him to the side and sits on most of the eggs, but he muscles his way back in and ends up sitting on a couple of them. I've finally seen the gander get up to eat and drink this Sunday, it may very well have been his first time up all week. It's pretty funny to watch them egg snatch as soon as the other gets off the nest, they both want to sit on all of the eggs. We ended up with 13 eggs in the nest, I am going to candle them this Friday to see if any are growing and to toss out all the extras. I have a feeling over half of them aren't fertile since the gander has been sitting all week.

They are really tolerant of the ducks being around them. The drake stands on top of them and pecks at their heads, or he'll stick his head under them I'm assuming to look at the eggs. The duck will walk over the top of them too or I even watched her putting straw on top of the female goose. But the duck just started laying herself this weekend, so I don't know if she was just feeling extra maternal? The geese don't even care about any of it, I guess it takes a village to raise goose eggs! LOL

I gave them all a different splash pond, the ducks seem more animated and normal now, I'm guessing they didn't like the last one. Everybody seems to like this one better. The side are a little shorter, they could all get in the last one, but maybe it was more difficult than they would have liked?

I have a few questions. First off, let me say that I appreciate any ones advice. Secondly, here is my story. I have two ganders. both are blind in their left eye, don't know how it happened but it did. One gander is 16 years old, his goose died two years ago. He is a mix breed. gray with blue eyes and large, but with no dewlap like the Toulouse, although that is how his is marked. The other gander is 2 years old. He is a Chinese. He only wants to be with our white rock rooster, he actively paces that chicken yard fence to try and get to him....I don't know why, I think he is very confused!!! Yesterday I purchased two Toulouse geese. both females and I separated them. I know this sounds bad but I do not quarantine animals, just my personal preference. The Geese and the Ganders can interact through a fence, but they have no interest in each other. I will be releasing the geese this evening. One will go in the field with the Chinese and the Old gander will go with one in the chicken yard, since the Chinese will only try to stay with the rooster. Does any one have any other suggestions for me? I know this is the middle of the breeding season and I would love to get some fertile eggs or for a goose to sit, but if it doesn't happen this year then so be it. Thanks for any replies!

It may not be too late for eggs or a broody my goose usually doesn't begin to brood till into April so there is still time , hope your ganders like the girls you have selected for them. Did the Chinese and the Rooster grow up together? Seems funny the gander would fixate on the rooster, my gander was hatched by a duck so for 5 yrs all he knew were ducks took him a while to realize he was actually a goose but after I got him a female goose mating season cinched the deal and they are now a pair. Hopefully things will work out for yours too. Keep us updated.

That gander really wants to be a papa. or a mama. I just hope things don't get out of hand when hatching begins and goslings get trampled. you'll have to watch for that and maybe remove the gander if he doesn't cooperate. Funny about the geese and ducks, my gosh my geese won't let the duck get near them.

He was raised with other geese. I had 4 Chinese to begin with. 3 ganders and a goose. the goose sat and unfortunately something killed her in the nest box and took all of her eggs right before hatching. After that this gander was at my grandpa's and fixated on his rhode island red rooster and now it is my rooster. He really does seem like he is courting him. I am hoping with the female there that he we make that switch. I have thought about penning them together to force him to go to her. No idea what is up with him.

You probably shouldn't put the goose inside a pen with a gander and roo, if the gander is attached to the roo he may not like the goose interfering and hurt her. Maybe put the rooster separate from the goose and gander. I had to actually remove my gander from his mama duck where he couldn't even see her so he'd begin to warm up to the goose I got for him. He'd chase the goose away and act like he was going to hurt her. Once My gander couldn't see the duck he began to warm up to the goose but it still took about 2 months. They form strong bonds.
Sorry you lost your goose to a pred. Another reason why we always rec keeping the flock locked up at night for protection.

What a funny flock you have there

Our gander, Gerald, who is normally quite tolerant of the chickens, but has a difficult relationship with the sheep (that's another story!) will not tolerate anyone except me going in to the pen, and even I'm not allowed near Geraldine (his mate) at the moment.

She has 12 eggs in the nest (at the last count) but not showing any signs of sitting yet.

I have just hatched 3 of the early eggs she laid so I am hopeful that the remainder will be fertile.
