I'm pleased to report that we found Nine a new home, where he joins 2 brown African female geese. Tonight is our first night without him and we miss him a whole lot, but are getting by knowing that he's got a nice place to stay. There's a nice pond with water that's much clearer than ours (and its probably deeper too), that he probably wont be afraid of - he & April didnt like our pond very much - the water was probably to dark for their taste. And he met a pony for the first time!
He can definitely distinguish between our dog, whom he likes to bully, and that pony, who he ran away from. Our Nine is a clever (and silly) boy. I was hoping he would run up to the new geese out of excitement to see them, but instead seemed kind of shy. Nine had found his reflection on our truck's bumper and was making cooing noises to himself the last 2 days, so we knew it was critical to find him some company fast. I hope he & the 2 geese get over their initial timidness quick.
We're going to keep in touch with his new home to make sure he adapts well.
This is wonderful news Going Bhonkers! Bitter sweet for you and yours, I know, but being able to hear and maybe see him in the future should be a help.
Talk about bittersweet. As a teenager I had a pet donkey who was apparently pregnant when we bought her. She had a baby and we eventually sold the mother. The baby, Wendy was the best pet ever. When I got married she moved to our farm. She proved to be too much work with a full time job, a wife that worked full time who was pregnant and a toddler. We were remodeling our house and neighbors had 2 pitbull crosses that would chase her. After repeated times of her getting cut up from running through fences and all sorts of actions to get neighbors to contain dogs I had to choose to rehome her. She went to a cousin of my wife who lives nearby with several horses who are pampered. She is very happy and well cared for. All of this to say it is very hard to part with a pet that you are so attached too, even when you know that they are in a better place. Wendy was 8 years old when she went to live in her new home and is now. She will be 17 this year. I know how hard it is to part with Nine. I am sure he will be happy with 2 ladies though.
Thanks everyone. I really hope the two other geese warm up to him.
You're exactly right, Flockman - definitely bittersweet. Thank you for that story, its good to hear about your donkey's happy ending. Gosh, I'm hoping the same thing for Nine.
