Goose Housing for Bed Time

This may be long...

Pick them up and hold your hand flat like if you were going to slap someone. With fingers pointed up toward the tail press your hand palm first into the soft under belly near their anus. Feel for the pubic/pelvic bone it will feel like two finger tips together pointing back at your fingers which should touch you on the second bend in your fingers. Those bones flex. For a gander half the width of a finger will lay in the groove between those bones as if being craddled by them. For a young goose that has never laid an egg the finger will lay in between those bones comfortably. For a goose that has laid eggs 2 to 3 fingers will lay in between them comfortably. Just like a woman that has given birth those bones have spread. DO NOT try this on a gosling under 3 mos old, it wont work the bones arent big enough to be able to feel the groove yet and although im not certain and im cautious with my babies that young anyways, it may hurt them.

This HAS worked for mine and i know its not breed specific i have 4 breeds. I tested it on the ones i knew where goose and gander, and also on the ones i didnt know, those all turned out to be right too.

LoL now bring on the critics LoL

That is very interesting, now if I just had a young goose to test it on.

I elected to go with getting the DNA Feather Sexing. Not so expensive and I just can't bring myslef to flipping her over and checking. She has just started to let me get to pet her and play a bit so I'm not gonna mess that up. I'll post the results.

Since I am not sure if she's a male/female about when should I be looking for eggs is she is a gal? Do they lay them in the pen or yard or both?

Also I have a garden that is fenced in but a bit overgrown with weeds. Can I put her there to forage around? Oh and lately she has been digging in her yard and made a hole. Is that normal?

You should start looking for eggs in Late January. Geese start mating the end of december and eggs start to appear in late january early february. My young goose was about 10 mos old when she started laying this past season.
You should be able to put her in your garden but make sure that there is no harmful plants in there first. Some can kill geese. As for the digging its normal mine like to find soft areas in the yard and dig out holes of all sizes.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll cut that yard and bring her there. Its bigger than her pen and has the grass so I thought she might like it. I have our pool next to this garden so I figured she would like to have more room and hang out.

Dolly is doing fine. She is growing like a weed. I will be building her a new house because she has outgrwon the large dog house she stays in at night. I have to admit I am so happy I got her. I was skeptical at first to have a goose but I have come to really like her. We are bonding more now which I think is cool. She has allowed me to get closer and closer to her withought a fuss.

She is making this new sound much like a whine or cry but I am sure nothing is wrong. It's very new so I guess thats why I see it as different. No way to explain it but as a cry or whine. I hear her doing it when she doesn't see me around. Funny when she sees me come out the house she does this really loud honk. I guess she knows me huh?

I have considered getting another but just haven't done it. I figured they would need more room for two. I don't know. For now its Dolly, my chickens and two dogs so that keeps me happy and busy.

She will be happier if you decide to get her a buddy of her own kind. and I think your right she is crying for you because she is lonely. she is sure pretty. another thing to remember is when building her a new place to sleep is to put alot of ventilation in it. moldy bedding is very unhealthy for waterfowl well poultry in general but water fowl are very sensitive so clean bedding and lots of ventilation.

Our oversized dog house turned goose house is more the size if a kids play house. We also added a screened in porch area with the door made with screen also... Actually the screen is hardware cloth. They love the porch, they can see out plus get a breeze. Also I put a solar light inside the house at night so its not like a dark cave.
