I would like to get some advice on bedding my goose in the evenings. Dolly has a very large dog house that I put her in each night. It is a struggle each night to get her to go in it. Every now and then she just goes in the dog house but it is rare without some coaxing and her fussing.

Do I need to build something larger/better than the dog house? If so will that change her accepting that she goes inside for the night? I guess that leads me to the question do I HAVE to put her up each night?

Dolly is about 4 months old and what kind? I don't know. Got her from the feed store as a baby. Love her to death although she doesn't always love me. LOL.I added a picture of her for you to see. Man I think she’s beautiful.

She’s the funniest thing too. When she sleeps on one leg with her head hidden in her wings. Priceless. Lol. I never had a goose before so this is quite the experience.

Look forward to hearing some feedback.

Thanks.

Makes me think Toulouse but not completely convinced, but she is lovely. and yes please lock her up at night for her own protection and to keep you from having your heart broken finding her gone or eaten one morning . does her dog house have adequate ventilation? windows? they need lots of air flow. We just recently built a goose house for our 2 geese, lots of donated material, ask around you never know what folks may have just laying around including old windows just waiting for someone to come haul off.

my 2 would never want to sleep outside but they have been use to sleeping in their house, you have to train them. and have you ever thought of getting her a flock mate. they really do like their own company

Miss Lydia,

Wow thanks. I read something one time about more ventiliation so I actually cut a hole in the back of the dog house to get her more air. I'm not sure if its good enough but better. I really like the building you have. Might give that a try.

I have also thought about getting her a flock mate. Do I buy one that is young or does that matter?

BTW I will not let her stay out at night no matter howmuch she fusses. :+)

Might be hard to find goslings this time of year then you'd have to be really careful introducing a gosling because of size difference, but sometimes this time of yr you might be able to find folks that are starting to sell off some of their spring hatching look on here on the Buy sell trade thread and sometimes on the rehoming and maybe even on craigslist and rescues in and around your area. I have even seen when animal shelters have water fowl up for adoption, always nice to give a home to one that's been given up. Hope you find one. keep us updated.

Be sure what ever you do to use 1/2" hardware cloth[wire] over any openings in her house, It's amazing how small a hole some preds can get through.

Thanks again. I found someone near my on Craigs list that has two female Chinese geese 3 months old. I got Dolly in April 2013 so that should put them close to age. Whatcha think?

I also found a place that will sell me the African type gray geese but young geese 10.00 each ONLY PAIRS .. will not sell just females. Whats your thoughts on this?

Also can you tell from the pictures what kind of Goose I have? Everyone ask and I have no clue.

Look forward to your advice or thoughts on the matter. I guess I'll be expanding...

That sounds awesome Congrats and Dolly will be so happy to have friends. I'm thinking she maybe a mix she looks to have Toulouse in her maybe mixed with Canada? just a guess though but it's a beautiful mix. Where did you get her ?

I was buying some baby chickens and the feed store had two goslings. He just about gave them to me cuz he didn't want them anymore and no one would buy them. Ubfiortunately one died. Dolly has thrived as you can see.

I also found a place that has African type gray geese Pairs for Sale - 50.00 per pair. They also have young geese 10.00 each ONLY PAIRS .. will not sell just females. So is it cool to get a pair and put them together?

Of course since still young they will mature together and become a trio. Let me know what you get this is exciting. I'd still get them close to her age. just me though.
