By the way, YES a mare will put a stallion in it's place. I know from experience with our mini mare. Buck would get the idea to mount her while pregnant and she would kick the crap out of him. He was the sire of her foal and she kept him in his place......

Another warning be careful with the mare after she foals.... Lady our mare was fine with us just a couple hours after she foaled.
But when we left, I was going to get the camera to take pictures and when I walked back in to take the photo's she came over and turned and kicked the crap out of me. She did this the whole time after the foal was born. You really had to watch her. Just a warning not all mares are like what lady was.
But they are very protective of the foals.
Very interesting, i know nothing about horses.

Thanks everyone!!!

The initial integration went pretty well. There were lots of fireworks and my guys didn't care that she is pregnant. They made clear she is at the bottom of the herd and has to stay at end of pasture. However, within an hour or so, Paks (our mare) decided she'd make friends and is grazing with her at end of pasture, while my boys guard their feeding area/shelter. Whew!

Women have to stick together.

Justice is the one we had to worry the most about. Iain even made me halter Justice at one point he was so worried about him. Here are pics of Patience (her new name) posing and with Iain walking her from neighbor's barn to our pasture. For reference, Iain is 5'9".

Back in goose land.... we moved Spirit and his buddies, Ember, Blind Girl & Gimpy into new backyard pen. Then we enlarged front yard, moved over 3 grey adult girls and integrated them (and Hitch & Shuffle) with our juvenile group. So far, it is working out well, but I may move Hitch & Shuffle back into Spirit's pen if anyone hassles them.

Finally, in awesome african goose news.... No. 1 has taken two white girls as his own and basically became leader of the remaining rescue group. Here are pics of our african group swimming with the ducks (they were definitely staying in water until horsey fireworks ended). The proud brown african swimming at the front of the whites is No. 1.

Its gonna be tough to remember to wish you happy birthday in 9 days! But I'm gonna try. :D

My mare was good with me only around her after she foaled, but nobody else. I continued to groom her daily her whole prenancy, and just carried on with the regular activities, but I didn't make any effort to touch the colt for about a week. I'm pretty sure If I'd chased him around, or grabbed him, we'd have had some issues. Do be cautious....

However, what a great birthday present! I got a scooter last year, not much this year, so I think I'll ask for a horse next year.
