gosling dying

i would not give your gosling the turkey medication. At this point, you don't know what your gosling is suffering from and administering unknown medicine can be deadly.

On the sugar water, you may want to do a search as i was just guesstimating. i sure hope your gosling makes it. i'm lucky to have a really good vet nearby who has extensive experience with waterfowl and poultry.

I agree with you about the medication. Deaths in shipped birds I feel are usually due to stress & the digesting of the shipping material. This is why I always raise mine on alfalfa. Geese tend to eat anything. Make sure you have a clean yard when setting them free. Mine tried to eat the string from the feed bag. The smallest thing & they will find it :/

Hmm based on what you guys are saying the two things I am worried about most is the shavings and the grit.

Would they die if they didn't get enough grit?

I went home and the baby had moved about four inches to the other side of the water. He also seemed the cheeping a bit more heartily although still softly compared to his peers. And I saw him take a little sip of water when he heard his peers drinking like mad.

So these are good signs it seems like... I got a hold of the medicine and it says "SMZ/TMP suspension per ml" so it seems like it might be bactrim the antibiotic. If this is the case would you still recommend not using it?

I suggest calling the vet on the medication. Grit is important. As long as you have it mixed with the food it should be ok. Sounds like there has been some improvement so just keep your fingers crossed. Don't worry the sick bird & hopefully it will make a recovery.

I called the vet and he said to give the baby some of the antibiotics. I gave it just a tiny amount but I haven't seen any improvement. Possibly even worse. Although its probs not because of the meds. =(

I have had geese for many years and I have always understood that you must NOT give geese medicated food. I always uae unmedicated chick starter and later on layer pellets or crumbels also unmedicated. I would not give geese antibiotics with out an avian vet saying it is ok.

Well he is still alive. Not moving very much except his head.

They do have unmedicated feed. The vet I talked to is a farm animal vet... I don't know any avian specialists around the area.

I would say he is doing about the same.

Our latest guess he is has a pneumonia type of sickness... They were outside for a few hours Sat and Sunday and perhaps got a little chilled?

The other three are completely fine.

I hope to wake up in the morning with a chipper gosling in the room next door...

He is still alive and it seems like his chirps are very powerful! Not moving around too much though.

About 5 minutes after I gave him the antibiotics last night a little liquid was dribbling out of his beak. Does this mean he didn't get enough?

Also could he be constipated? I haven't seen any poo. Or is that just the result of not eating and drinking very little?

Can you get some Poultry Nutri Drench it can be given straight and could give him a boost he is needing right now. Brooder pneumonia is something that happens when theres a build of of ammonia in the brooder from wet shavings. he needs to be in the cleanest enviroment you can give him right now. and be very careful when giving anything into the mouth that it doesn't go into the lungs. if you feel hes constipated add a little molasses to his drinking water but only for a few hours. I hope he pulls through.
