Hello All,

I got a suggestion to post a pic of my gosling to this thread to see if you guys can tell me what breed he is.

History: I got him from a farm swap for free because farmer couldnt sell him. After placing 4wk old disabled goose in my ten year olds arms he said "here ya go son, he will be a good pet for you". My son is my enabler to having too many animals so away we drove with the sweetest disabled goose I will ever meet in my lifetime.

Health: His hock joint ligaments are underdeveloped in right leg. His right tibia is laterally rotated at joint so his right foot points to the right. Over the last week he has developed right side angel wing. After many hours a research and a trip to the vet my conclusion is that he hatched deformed due to nutritional deficiencies from the mother. He should live ((hopefully long) a good life as a healthy disabled goose. Once he is fully grown he will be evaluated again and either have a stifle type brace fitted or possible surgery to fuse joint depending on his development.

Farmer's Claims: *NOTE- I dont trust anything the farmer says because she has many many animals and frequently gets animals given to her to sell at the farm swap. However, she told me that Forrest hatched around the first week of June. He is a Gander Pilgrim goose. He hatched alone ( I dont know if she meant late/last?) and deformed so they put him in with the chicks in their brooder where he was very happy when we got him.

Personality: Farmer said that he was handled a lot. What she should have said is that he was imprinted. He is the absolute sweetest bird that I think I will ever meet in my life. He loves my son and I. He isnt happy unless he is with us.

Daily Life: I am only gone about 5 hours a day so most of the day Forrest is inside with us. He sits in a "chick chair" that I found a design for on Pinterest. He also spends a bunch of time swimming depending on what we are doing or what room we are in. He is happiest in his "chair" because it takes weight off of his vet wrapped joint and he has his water and food right in front of him. He spends about an hour walking outside in the grass when we are out with the ducks during forage time, but he doesnt enjoy walking because he is unstable and trips and gets frustrated. He walks up to our feet and screams at us until we pick him up or sit down beside him. As he gets bigger and busier, my husband and I plan on making him a "walker" with wheels so he can move around but keep weight off the leg. I am a massage therapist and know the benefits of water exercise and rehabilitation so every night in between bandage replacements, we make him swim to strengthen up his legs. They had him on meat bird chicken mash so I am still getting him use to eating veggies and fruit. He eatsMazuri starter. I add dry yeast and probios once a day.

He tolerates being with one of my muscovy ducklings that has adopted him. They sleep in a coop inside the duck run so they can see and talk to my other 9 muscovies but he cant get hurt.
I say tolerate because he screams at me for a good 10 minutes as I walk away at night. I have though about leaving him inside but dont think its fair because he would be spending those hours while we are gone alone in a dark house.

When we first got him.

first week we got him.

Hi again Andrea. What a lovely set-up you have for your gosling. As for pilgrim gander, I really don´t think so...going by the colour, it´d be a female if it´s a pilgrim...like in this pic:
The males´ feathers come in white, the females´ grey. Glad it has a little duck friend. That´ll help a lot for now...

Thanks for replying! I was hoping you would see the post and the updated pics. I agree with you about being a female, the only thing that throws me off is the pink beak and feet. Is this a personal pic of yours? Do you have more pictures of these goslings? I cant believe the size difference of the adult male vs female in this pic. I think you have muscovies as well dont you? I will tell you that Forest is as big as our ducklings and they are 4 weeks older than him.

Hi Andrea. The males aren´t really much bigger than the females, but in this pic (not mine, I got it off google, as it´s a good pic), the male is just walking tall as they do. The pink bill thing makes me think it could be a cottonpatch female, then...here´s a pic, again, not mine. (this one has the pied markings, others are grey, solid)

Do a bit of research on Cottonpatches, see what you think....

That's as good as naming my blue scovy Bolshy (which name stuck instantly).

Well I´m sure she lives up to her name! I have one here that I call Briguenta, which means quarrelsome.

She´ll take on up to 4 geese! It takes the ganders gang to see her off at times!
I got my first egg for the year on Friday - I guess that means that breeding season has officially begun here.
Well, we´re in company then. Mine also started last week. At the moment, one nest has two eggs and another has one.

I know who´s laying in one of the nests, but I missed who laid in the other, though I have an idea who it may have been... Must keep an eye out tomorrow! (Was laid yesterday while we were out)

Hello you're doing a good job helping her! This is no pure breed but a cross breed of some sort and look's to be a female :) There is no breed of pure breed gosling that has a orange beak when that young and the feather's brown, The colour of the gosling when week old also tell's us it is a mixed breed :/
