Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Hi! I told you that I would post a video. I have no experience with posting videos so if this doesnt work let me know. We were trying to get her to honk on camera a few weeks ago when her voice started to break and change. She was afraid of my phone though.

Dear little soul, so well cared for. Lovely little gosling noises.

I have a few news items to share. First, the solo African/Toulouse gosling that my goose hatched turned out to be a male. Sadly, that made the group's ratio 3 boys/1 girl (they were two pairs but one of my girls got killed by a predator earlier this year). So my friend who has two juvenile females traded me an adult female Toulouse for my boy. The new Toulouse girl is just darling, but the 2 ganders/1 goose group refused to accept her. I felt bad for the new girl so I put her with my Toulouse group and luckily she appears to be integrating well with them.

In other news, my pigeon, Chloe, was unsuccessful hatching a baby. My schedule is super hectic these days and I felt bad about not being able to spend more time with her, so yesterday we picked up a young juvenile pigeon that was getting beat up at my friend's house. I expected it to be love at first sight, but Chloe considers the new youngster to be trespassing and wants to kill it. We had to put the new pigeon in a large cage inside Chloe's room for its own protection. I'm hoping Chloe warms up to the little one, but am starting to realize that pigeons are not as socially needy as geese and perhaps she is just fine by herself. If she will not accept the new bird, I'll have to return it and wait for Chloe to go into breeding mode and borrow a male instead.

Finally, my dear (but insane) husband discovered an adult magpie with a broken leg yesterday in our driveway and decided to save it. We took it to my friend's rescue to be examined and wrapped up and the bird is now living inside a cat carrier in Chloe's room. He has to remain in cage for 3 weeks and then get re-examined. I cannot believe I am caring for a gosling killer inside my house, but oh well. It makes my husband happy.

So it´ll become tame, won´t fly away...and then what????

I´ve bred doves in the past, not much different to pigeons, and although they look sweet, they can be horrid to others of their species. You´re right, not at all like geese.

Disappointing about your little chap, but nice news about your new goose.

What a precious gosling, she just seems so relaxed with you both, which is great since she needs care. My gosling sound just like her baby noises.
Well, we will just have to see what our goslings end up being when they get older as far as gender =) Forest is very very comfortable with us. She likes being held and getting kisses. She still has a 5 foot radius that she likes us to stay in. I'm not sure if she would get such good care if she was scared or unfriendly. It was very hard for me to care for the injured scovy's foot when he was flapping all over the place and struggling. We were both stressed out from me soaking his foot. twice a day. He would punch me with his wings because he was terrified. He got the absolute minimal care needed. He has recovered and currently lives with our flock of outside ducks. Our ducks are not personable even though we have handled them from the day we got them. They come up to us and get food, will eat out of our hands, let us pet them (a few), and go into the coop every night. We dont pick them up now that they are older (only to clip wings). They seemed to become unfriendly once they were old enough to free range in the yard.

Forest is handled all the time and wants the attention until about 9pm. She gets tired and cranky. She beats up her toys and throws them around. She attempts to peck but we correct it and put her to bed. She listens to Chris Botti and sleeps in my son's room. I think she likes the trumpet because the geese sound like horns when they are adults!

I hope her personality never changes. We love her like a family member.

Tell me about it! I'm hoping it will only view us as jailors and be happy to be freed once better. Only time will tell with that.

Yep, doves/pigeons are very different from waterfowl. We will see after a few days if it is like integrating a new goose vs a new cat. If pigeons turn out to be more like cats, then I'll stop feeling bad Chloe is alone.

I visited the juvenile boy yesterday and he seems do be doing well with his new girls. Hopefully our new goose will be accepted by the group soon. I'm really pleased with her.

That´s great it´s worked out well with the geese.
As for the pigeon situ, it´s prob because the other one is a youngster. When it becomes adult, and especially if a male, it´ll probably be better.... let´s hope!
