Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

8 thats horrible ! Well i hope it wont happen again :/

And Iain i thank you for that answer because i cant find anywhere on internet of African gander and female embden crosses! O i dont know the out come i want to know this because i want brown youngsters and not white with specks or lavender with white ! But i guess that Brown african with white afican make brown geese with bit of white! I like that i hope its the same with the embden! We will see this year :) Cant find this cross anywhere on internet and they are common breeds so now ill find out myself! This will be exciting

How do you tell if they have the dilute gene? I havent gotten that far into understanding their genetics yet. Do you have to have them tested or do you go by what they produce?
I go by what they look like and what they produce. For example, I got what looked like a trio of pilgrims. The blokey I bought them from had no idea what they were, I was guessing and hoping. ( Pilgrims are dilute gene...the males have the double dilute gene, so they´re white (ish). Females have a single gene, so they´re pale grey with white faces.)
But in breeding them, I knew they were auto-sexing because they´ve bred true....white males, with pale grey rumps and wing-tips, and pale grey females, with increasing amounts of white on their faces as the months pass. I find them very pretty.

The experiments are with the unknown mix-breed (greylag-based) females with a dilute gander, which has resulted in some interesting goslings, but I still have to wait a bit until I know what sexes they are and if there´s a pattern as regards male/female, pied/solid/dilute, etc.....I have people wanting to buy them, but I´´m not ready to sell yet, as I want to be sure of what I have here first.

Yes Serv, he shot her while she was playing near the pond. I tried to save her but there was too much damage. Because of that i never leave my geese alone outside.
Grief, poor little thing! I meet Brazilians on a regular basis who think that the States is a very civilized and relatively safe place to be.......I think I´ll just stay here, thank you!

Its people who move from city because one day they woke up and said i think ill try country life, then buy property near a farm but dont like the funny smells, noises and actions of the animals.
I found a sign that reads
" this is a farm with animals. Animals make funny noises, have weird smells and have sex outdoors.
If you dont like noise, smells and sex outdoors, dont buy houses near a farm!"
Some people are just mean and cruel to animals regardless

Absolutely true. Shame, because they´re missing out on so much.

I feel lucky to have been born on a farm and to have the opportunity to work with animals and to give the ones i have, the best life i can. I cant save them all but i can save a few.
I´ve always lived in the countryside, in England and now here...I love it too, in touch with the wonders of nature. As trees have been taken down, the wildlife population has diminished, so we´ve planted a lot of native trees on our patch here and are making the marsh more accessable to our geese as well as wild birds like lapwings, egrets, storks, rail, ducks, ibis, etc, and bit-by-bit we´re seeing more and more beautiful birds that come for the fruits and insects,

and beasties...even little tiny marmosets. And then, of course, our dogs, chickens, ducks and my super gorgeous geese.

This pic is a whistling heron, very odd bird.
