Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Hello Guys
I started with 20 eggs from our trio of West of Englands in our incubator.

Out of the 20 only 3 have made it to day 27!!! No wonder it is a rare breed if they don't hatch!

They were staggered going into the incubator. My first one hatched on day 34. However she has straddle legs, which we are now trying to correct with elastic bands. She is on her own at the moment with a cuddly toy. We are hoping to get her a duckling for company tomorrow night. She is a fighter!

We also have another batch from a different trio, which were a lot smaller eggs and they are doing really good so far. Some of them are trying to internally pip on day 27.

I don't know about you but it was not this hard last year to hatch eggs. My girls have also decided that they are no longer laying eggs. Bummer.

Your not the only one... wonder if the weather has something to do with it
Here's what dinnertime looks like around here!

Went out this afternoon and gathered 6 more eggs from 3 different nest. Will set them later after cleaning up a couple.

I have due 5 eggs on the 10th and 12th... We shall see if they make it to hatch. I started with 11 and lost some at 1 week and 2 weeks.

I also had 20 eggs collected and there were so many non fertile ones. This year has been that way the winter was very cold and it took it's toll on the geese fertility... Out of 20 down to maybe 7-8.

Then I have some from different days and keep putting eggs and checking for fertility.
We shall see what happens?
Even my Embdens are having trouble this spring

Thank you. Im sorry to hear about your mom and im glad to hear she has you beside her and is able to enjoy the birds and plants that you got for her.
My mom has had two craniotomys within 4 mos of eachother last year, two major surgeries on my upper leg to remove lymphnodes 5 yrs ago when first diagnosed and one lumpectomy on her breast. Numerous radiation treatments, kemo pills and now a kemo iv every 3 wks for what has developed on her kidney. She never shows any anger over it though which is amazing to me. Until now she has never been bed ridden, shes has for a month now due to what i think is a muscle spasm from stress it only hurts when she gets agrivated over something.

I think animals are the best healers for the sick. you are right i believe it does relax them and gives them something to look forward to. I even bought a pregnant donkey for my mom to have something other than chicks and goslings to be excited over. Since the donkey is now showing signs of foaling soon she has perked up.

My mom has good days and bad days. She loves fishing and camping, so sometimes we make my dad take to the coast for a whole weekend. She also loves to go to thrift stores and antique shops looking for old stuff, so we do that a lot too, lol. Every year she plants a good sized veggie garden and I help her.. We try and keep her busy to take her mind off things, it helps.

I believe animals can sense when we are upset or sick. My Belgian can be rough in his affections, but is soooo gentle with my mom. I also think that (for mothers at least) babies have a way of making you happy, and that can only help. I hope next year to join in the hatch-a-long and have baby chicks and gozzies running around making mom and I laugh and smile.

Good luck with the donkey foal, hope your mom enjoys it!

Checked some eggs that were in for 7 days. 2 non fertile and one that quite at 2 weeks. This has to be due to the super cold and long winter we have had! I know that a lot of people are experiencing this with their geese not just Sebastopol's.

So i candled again, day 6. I guess i do have slow ones, or i couldnt see the others as well now 12 eggs are developing. 2 of Stormy's and 2 of Ethels are apart of them :weee
Martha's eggs are developing also shes a white chinese who i have seen mating with both the white chinese and the brown chinese ganders.
