Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Yay! 8! At least I know that I am not the only crazy goose lady. Well they call me the crazy bird lady, cuz I have chickens too, that ride on my shoulder, take food out of my hand, follow me to the car if I am going to work, come when they are called, fight the cats for space on my lap. Yeah, it's a hard knock life over at the crazy lady farm...
That here too... plus ducklings and toss in a Hahn's Macaw parrot as well.

It is official.
Bonnie is setting....and I'm gonna have fuzzy butts in about 28 days.....

Clyde is über protective, stands sentinel all day, and even attacked the hose that was filling his pool with fresh water.
Even she hissed at me when I dumped, cleaned and put the hose in, plus when I fee. I had to "knee" Clyde back so I could give them food. I speak to them every time, and I also wee-wee-wee a lot to them, so they do settle down and stop hissing but still not happy when I am in there working. :weee:ya:rolleyes::jumpy:yesss:

Hey everyone, mind if i join your thread? Great to see some familiar peeps! Love all the pics! I just hatched my first gosling of the season. Have another dozen incubating that i hope will hatch too.

Hey Julie. Long time no chat. Hope things are well. Congrats on your new gosling!

Hey guys, any advice what to do here? This is the late gosling and what I found when I went in today to see what was up. Yes, the remaining yolk is a nasty green color, and yes, it has an awful smell. Advice? Under a spoiler because it's not a pretty picture.

Poor thing. I can't tell by the pic, how connected to the egg is it? If not by much, I'd tie it off and get some betadine solution on there, the gunk in the egg can spread an infection to the baby. Good luck, hope everything goes ok with it!
quote name="samsr" url="/t/859891/goslings-of-2014-hatch-a-long/1540#post_13264695"]That looks like a gosling some chicken chics and a couple of quail. My little gosling is trying to unzip now. I am not at all sure what kind it will be. My neighbor from down the street gave me three goose eggs and said put them in them in the incubator. Two of them developed to term. I will post a pic or two once they both hatch.
Your pic sure is cute. I will be putting my goslings in the brooder with my
silkie/americauna mixes and dominiques. They hatched last week end. Its been a good hatching season. Good lick with
your little ones.[/quote]
And a duckling, can't forget the duckling, lol. Everyone shares a baby brooder here, then in a week or so when the waterfowl start getting messy and big enough to squish new serama chicks they'll go outside. Yay for your gosling zipping! This gosling is from an egg from mygese i recently gave to a new home, an embden mix. I can only have a few geese, in city limits, and am trying to switch to Sebastopol this year. Have 8 sebbie eggs in the incubator, hoping for at least a pair!

Ok.

Fine

I broke down.

I ordered TWO (a pair one boy one girl) Sebastopol goslings from Metzers.

I am ashamed that I could not wait. Too many cute pics and what's two more geese? Just more to love and laugh at!

Should be here by Wendesday, and I will of course post pics.....the trouble is I will have about 50 to choose from. LOL

OK!
I'll give it a shot. My very young African Geese have been laying for 3 months and they are not even a year old. I got lots (maybe 100) of eggs from 3 girls. I tried incubating (friends do it for me since I have no incubator) and the geese tried brooding, but were a lot more interested in partying with their friends. Needless to say, all efforts were fruitless. Just this last week a girl seems serious and is sitting tight. No playing for her. She only has 5/6 eggs, but I'm hopeful this time.
So, 5 days down and lots of waiting. Fingers crossed!

Crossing my fingers for a good hatch for your broody momma!

I have a chicken setting, and of course Bonnie my goose. Lemonade always let's me dig under her and take eggs out and rearrange, add, whatever. She's our most tame. She has (she is buff orp) she has duck, bantam, americauna (cannot see thru those) and ONE goose egg. About a dozen total. I see spider veins in all of them....so she may " mommy" a gosling too!

Now for the exciting part.....I went into the goose apertment, four times today and hung out pretty much half of today so far. Clyde only hissed once, the first time, when I added food. Later I spread some (keep the smell down) stuff, as suggested by a BYC thread. , next trip I pulled the pool out, then dumped it and refilled. , the last time in I took a chance. Gander Clyde was in the "back porch" area which is a chain link dog run, so I figured this is the best time. Not knowing how Bonnie would react, I spoke softy to her, and gently held her neck. She turned away (like she was embarrassed to trust me so much ) and actually allowed me t:popo grab an egg and candle it. I kept it under her, so she would trust me, and I only did three...but she didn't complain!! I may be able to really candle in a week and see all of them. :pop Those I picked, I saw spider veins in two of the three....couldn't see thru the other, but I am thrilled. So I will have my Sebbies and I will hatch some Pilgrims......so thrilled.

Any idea how to tell the ale. From female goslings coming this week? He will be banded but I mean after that. Any way to mark them so I can tell, that won't hurt them.

Well, the gosling with the infected yolk passed away. I checked him this morning and he is gone :( Not sure there was much I could really do for him anyway. That yolk was nasty and he had already absorbed most of it and probably had an infection inside. He probably never would have externally pipped if I hadn't done it for him.

Congrats! You could mark his head with food coloring. That won't hurt him, and it should last a while.
