Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

I know I don't NEED to share good news this time. But I will add to it.

Not about geese again, though. Nor chickens. Nor turkeys.

Nor even birds!

Four months ago, I caught my box turtles mating. Today... I got eggs!!

This time frame is normal for box turtles, who mate when they first leave "brumation" (an involuntary form of hibernation), but don't lay eggs until summer. Of course the incubation is totally different from polutry too. Only 80 degrees, at least 70% humidity (80% is best) for 60-90 days.

And you all thought waiting for geese to hatch was nerve-wracking!

That is so cool, when I was a kid I had a box turtle named Cindy.

I grew up with them too, and always thought they were cool :)

The first one I got for this group (these are part of a conservation project) came from my back yard, where one female was happily munching away on wet chicken feed after it rained!

Now I've got EIGHT! Six adults (two males, four females) and two younger ones. I didn't hatch out either of the younger ones, but one had a broken shell (nothing was exposed, it was just broken inwards, and it would give if you pressed down on it) and the other was a fresh hatchling I found huddling under a cooler in my front yard, in the blazing heat (not really near a source of water). I'm not even sure if those two are male or female yet, but they're thriving very well, and growing well too!

I would not have thought of box turtles being in a conservation project but I can see where they could become endangered since there is so much building and excavation going on all over the place. We use to see alot of Box Turtles but not anymore.

Mildred hatched 4 goslings for me yesterday. Her first hatch.
That´s a nice number. What breed is she? Can´t remember. so what are the goslings breed-wise?

I used to have greek tortoises in England, but it was too cold for them to breed successfully. I only got one egg, and that was cracked!

Ya'll we have been so heartbroken about losing the lil gosling, and i have some pics of her before I buried her if anyone would like to see her PM me. But guess what I got today?

Never ever found geese in my neck of the woods and look here An American Buff and Toulouse Buff goslings hopefully Missy and Sammy will adopt them, when we got home i carried the gosling out so Missy and Sammy could hear them and Missy stood up and looked under her. But they were both scared of the box so hissing was next, I'll introduce better tomorrow.

So, MLyd, did you give the gozzies to Missy yet?

livin she has just now come outside and I took the gozzies out and she hissed and Sam wanted to taste one so I wasn't about to leave them with them, This is going to take a while. Plus until they "adopt" these babies they are subject to my Muscovy's, LF hens and snakes and at being 3 days old they need alot of protection.

My two day old babies! Our first chicks or even animal babies ever. They are Embdens hatched by mum but rescued by us as she crushed one with her previous owner last year and we want to imprint them so we get friendly adults. She was sat on 6 eggs so a 50% success rate is great. We are in the uk so they are currently under a heat lamp in the kitchen. Soooo cute, we have never had so many visitors!!

I knew it! Just so cute that you want to keep them! haha. any excuse, eh? They´re really sweet, enjoy them. You really deserve it.
