Thanks to everyone for the awesome photos posted recently and all the great information you have taken the time to give me! I am so new at this and it seems the more information I learn about muscovies and geese the more confusing it all gets. It makes sense that the cross breeds are sterile with only scovies and mallards. I was on a scovie site when I read that. I'm glad I asked you guys because I just assumed that cross breeds were steril??? (like mules) (silly me that is species not breed..=) hadnt really paid too much attention to how silly that notion would be...


I do think Forest looks buff mixed Lydia. I will take some updated pics of her when I get home later. Her coloring is changing again. I am wondering if farmer doesnt turn out to be right about her being a male. Her new feathers that are slowly growing in are white.

I am questioning if she actually needs the bandage around her hock joint anymore. I will leave it there until her next vet visit, but her joints are finally getting strong enough. Her tibia is still completely rotated laterally so she will always be disabled, but if her vet wrap was gone she sure could move easier!

Yesterday I was holding her at chest level and talking to her (like always) and my husband happened to be walking by and stopped to look at me with that look that says "crazy bird lady". After a few minutes to watching me love on my bird, he said "is that bird leaning into you everytime you kiss it? ". I always kiss her chest right where her neck meets and her neck because she is soft and fuzzy in those two spots. I realized that when I kiss her, she does lean into me like she is giving me a hug =)


I have a question for you guys. I know that Forest is special, but are what age are goslings able to fly? Her flight feathers look pretty developed. Her right side where the angle wing started looks almost corrected. The masking tape made the feathers look a bit worn, but it helped the wing grow back to where it should be.

You´ll know when s/he might fly, because of all the flapping that s/he´ll do for a few days first. Just clip the flight feathers (primaries), but not too close. That´ll be all you need until next year.
If your bird´s a male, then the farmer doesn´t have Pilgrims.
I´d love to see a pic of the white feathers coming through, though. Very curious.
And really well done on all the work you´ve put into himher. A very special goose.

How could Forrest not love someone who has devoted them selves to her/his welfare. I clipped 3 of my geese wings just recently. Mama Missy, Babe and Toots the goslings. [12weeks old] they were just getting too much lift.

Well I'll be, Congrats. sounds early for goose laying.

It is early, as well as out of season. But I watched her get in the nest with only the wooden egg in it. When she got off, there was an egg. Ivory duck the climbed into the nest and laid her egg. There was a noticeable size difference between the duck and goose egg.

It also seems like now that Snow and Ivory are laying in the same nest, they have become friends. They will lay next to eachother while the other is in the nest. And Jasmine stays by Snow as well. It's really interesting to watch their interactions and behaviors towards eachother. Lately Ivory and Diasy duck are hanging out with the goose flock, while Ebony hangs out with the Cayuga ducks.
