Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Today has turned out to be pretty sad. My only Tufted Roman gander, Daddy Tufted, passed away. He had been having problems, which at first i thought was a niacin dificiency when we had a sort of drought and dying grass. After the brewers yeast and tablets only seemed to help a little and no one else was showing signs, then doctoring him for possible toxic poisoning, i thought he had had a stroke. Today he went into a seizure and passed away about an hour ago.
I guess when i am over this i will have to find another Tufted Roman gander before next season. If i am able to find one close that is, finding these 3 were like a needle in a hay stack.

I am so sorry 8.

Thanks everyone. Its not been a good day. I only had him for a year and a half, im not exactly sure how old he was. He came here with his two females, they were wild with little human contact. He ended up being like a feathered puppy begging for treats and allowing me to pick him up after a few months of being here. Hes going to be hard to replace.

Snow and Jasmine are 5 months. Peaches and Cream are 4 months old. I am concerned that laying so young could hurt them somehow?
I doubt it. Their eggs are likely to be small anyway, no good for breeding I´d say, but it´s just so early! Just make sure they have needed calcium and they should be ok.

I´m really fond of my Pilgrim for similar reasons. I bought a trio that were mainly left in the fields before they came to me, and they were really nervous. I can now pick up his goslings, and he´ll come and eat out of the pot in my hand, so I´m really impressed.
You´ll replace him, and the new one will be special too. Don´t forget to let us know, though.

In happier news... my new Toulouse goose seems to want to integrate with my African flock and specifically likes our most imprinted gander, so she spends lots of time nearby when I hang out in the pasture since my gander is always right under my feet. My gander is slowly warming up to her, too. In the meantime, our pair of juvenile hinnies have fully latched onto her, so she is no longer alone.

Here's my new girl, named Indi, with her duck buddies. The gander she is sweet on is right next to me.

That´s lovely, going well. I suppose a pic of the gander would just show the top of his head??

It looks lovely and lush there. Here, there´s a bit of green, but there´s a shortage of rain, so the greenery is struggling. I´m planting more lettuces!!!

Thanks, LB. We have had an unusually wet summer, making for pretty lush conditions. My animals have been spoiled!

The gander is my Chinese/African, otherwise known as a Metzer Hatchery African, named Ebay. While the new girl was meant to be with the African/Toulouse gander that lost his mate this past spring, if Ebay wants to be with her, I will not try to stop it. I just won't allow them to hatch their own eggs.

That´s what I´m doing. I´m popping extre eggs of other geese I want to breed under the ones i don´t want to breed. Keeps ém all happy!

I think you must have had our share of rain over there! Here we´ve had the dryest year for over 50 years. Some wells have dried up, and folks are having to sell their animals. I went past a lake today that´s drying up. The people usually have about a dozen geese around it, but I didn´t see any today. I´m sure it must be stagnant.
I love Ebay´s name!
What will you do for the other gander that lost his mate?

Ive decided to just rip the band-aid off and start looking for a new Tufted Roman gander. If i wait too long the new one might not bond with Maggie in time for breeding season. With Maggie being a witch and all i need to get one asap.
If it wasnt for Ethel having that larger than normal tuft i could just pair her with a new one. With her attitude of "i love any gander" and that tuft, i like using her as my wild card female in my cross experiments.
We will see how fast i can find a new gander around here. Maybe i can get lucky and the guy i got these from will have more.
