Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

It feels wonderful to finally own our 9 acre piece of heaven and our house is coming along slowly but surely. We meet with the county in the morning to start the permit process while obtaining bids for the site prep. Hope to break ground in a few weeks.

Very exciting and so much "Flat ground" lol am envious.

Guess it's not the end of season here. When feeding last night, I heard peeping coming from my white scovy's nest. I'll be ******, but my scovy managed to finally hatch herself a baby (after many failed attempts for the last 1.5 years).

Oh, happy scovy!

Well here's my 2 at 3 months old either they are right in my face or have their backs turned.

Love them to pieces. I think we need to start a thread for the teenagers now.
What a great idea! My teenagers are playing mummies and daddies, fighting over nests, laying silly-sized eggs, the boys are hanging around in little gangs, just looking at the gals, a bit lost-looking. Totally teenagers! haha
And yours are 3 months! They´re huge, but the time´s gone by so fast, too.

@RURU , I love the pictures!! Your geese are so pretty! I wish I had the room to have more breeds of geese. I would have sebies because they are so pretty! I like the 2nd gander. I like the spots on the splash ganders. What is that black thing in the 4th pic? Is it a pond pump?

@livininbrazil They are sooooo cute!!! You said "if they are autosexing" does that mean they are not pilgrims? I cant wait to see more pics as they grow! The next time you take pics would you please take a picture so I can see what their coop. I am still trying to come up with a "to spec" design for my husband for our coop. Our ducks are in a chain link dog run that is layered with chicken wire and they have a coop inside the run that is snake proofed with hardware cloth for when they were little. Their house has worked great for the summer but I want a shed like structure
for the winter.

I have a goose question.

The farmer that I got Forest (16 wk old disabled imprinted pilgrim) from is selling her pilgrim breeders. I inquired about her post and she told me that she has recently bought 2, 4 mth old goslings from two different breeders but they have problems and arent breeder quality. they have angel wing (which I fixed with Forest). I am not concerned about breeding (dont have the room). I would like to have a friend or two for Forest. Since she is imprinted, will she even like the other geese? Will the other geese like her? I would be buying a "pair" but honestly, I just want the female, I dont want a hormonal male hurting Forest's bad leg. Are they like ducks where you need more females or do they actually need to be paired up?

They would live outside and Forest would live inside until she is ready to live outside (if ever). Would they accept her or attack her the way the ducks do? Since they would potentially only be together a few hours a day. (Until Forest wants to be outside more...if ever)

Maybe I should just take @Miss Lydia 's advice and wait until next spring and bring home a baby...Will she and a baby except each other better?

Thanks for helping me make the right decision for Forest. I love my BYC friends!

We checked on our white scovy's nest and found just the one duckling. The rest of her eggs looked bad so we pulled them out and set up a pen around her nest. The baby looks very healthy and I'm sure momma is pleased with herself.

I was thinking that today when I clicked on the link and realized that 2014 is almost over.

@livininbrazil I read your reply about your teenagers! That is so funny. When do geese start laying eggs? Do I need to be worried about Forest trying to lay eggs soon? I wonder if she even would since she is special.

Livin that my friend is the colour a Lavender gosling. XD
Here he is:

As you can see, there are two little orangey bills here. So, I´m expecting to have 4 females and two males. The 7th egg has a live gosling in it, but about 2 days behind the others for some reason, so that´s indoors under a lamp so she can get out the nest and get these babies eating and drinking.

Forest is growing well, isn´t she?
My geese are free-range. They don´t have a coop. Where I live there is very little risk of anything getting them. Re. autosexing. There are about 5 known breeds of auto-sexing geese, where the female is different in colour to the male. Males are white, females, depending on the breed, are grey or pied or a mix of both. Here I have Pilgrim-type auto-sexing geese, but I also bought a couple of pied geese which would appear to be auto-sexing, going by what the seller told me. They look very like Normandy geese. So, I´ve left them to breed with my Pil ganders to see what would happen. I couldn´t take on any of her young males, as they were already interbred for generations. Not too bad, though, as the fertility seems to be 100%. And they do appear so far to be auto-sexing goslings. Time will tell.

I´ve had muscovies rear one duckling before, and they just are so devoted.
