Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Miss Lydia it may rain a lot normally but in summer only if warm gardens are fantastic!

You can grow anything but when winter hits the day temp is around 7°c above and nothing grows coz well yea it is winter but rains a lot.
I want to experience a winter with not rain all the time. But no winter was bad with rain as last winters!
One winter 5 years ago was record breaking wind lowest temp . and i remember we did not have that much rain and no snow
(we never have snow anyway)
Same here serv growing season is late may till first frost which is usually late Sept into Oct. we still have tomatoes coming on so hopefully they will make it before cold weather hits.
We had an extremely frigid winter last year. Brrr.

Brazil ! Imagine if you did go to Ireland! We would have swapped geese 24/7 XD
It sucks having a baby die in shell .
Well, if we´d gone to Ireland, I know I´d have turned rusty by now!!!! ;)
SSince i am on byc on my phone all the time i found out after a year on byc that there is desktop on my phone!Haha now i know how to have a avatar and make trends. etc.
And No i am not Chicken obsessed !!!!

Congrats livin on such a great hatch, always sad when you lose some but to be able to help hatch and give them back to mom must make you feel good. Look forward to seeing some new pics.
I was pleased Ihelped this one. I´d left the other one and lost it, so this time, as it had already ext. pipped, and was making a lot of noise, I decided to bring it in and see what was happening. Well, the membrane had no blood vessels in it, so I broke more shell and helped the little thing´s head out, and then it stopped being so noisy. So I left it to do the rest. An hour later, it was out, so off it went back to mom. Fine today, 3 little goslings cheeping away down there.
Brazil i am afraid we will need a few pics

I will, when I can. We´ve only been here early and late these days, just enough to feed the birds and do what´s necessary, but Monday we´ll be back to normal routine. I´ll try to get pics then. :)

yes, I have also rehabbed 2 injured ducks (hit by car) and rescued one scovy duckling. =) my dogs are the same way. I seem to attract the (health wise) problematic animals.....or am attracted to... not sure.

i took back the deformed goose and only kept Oliver. She was nice and gentle and I agree she would have calmed down eventually, but I wouldnt have been able to keep her in good conscious without taking her to a vet right away. I cant afford to take on another vet bill for a special needs goose while I am saving my animal money so I can afford Forest's vet bill. Her deformity was on the top of her rib cage under her wing.I took pics of her but its hard to see it. I had to feel around to tell why the wing was sitting funny, her tail is also super crooked and she had one ?pouch? like a toulouse but it is only on the right side? i thought pouches were on both sides or one in the middle.

I also took back 3 scovies that like to attack Forest. I released the two adult feral drakes that had injuries, now that they are mended. they are happy back in their old ponds where they grew up.

I am down to a comfortable number of ducks (3 ducks 1 drake). Oliver is happy outside with the ducks and hopefully one day Forest and Oliver will like each other enough for her to have a normal goose life outside. .....Right now she is afraid of Oliver and tries to climb up my leg so I will pick her up!!

I agree with you about the angel wing and it being too late but I have taped it anyway just in case there is a chance. I taped Forest's angel wing for three weeks and it fixed the wing enough for her to tuck it in. If it doesnt work for Oliver, I will clip his feathers.

Here is a pic Oliver Snow! What breed does he look like? See the light gray spots on his back? underneath his wings on his rump is the prettiest light gray with white circles (the way lace winged wyandotte's are colored) I will take a closer pic of his spots. He is about 5 or 6 lbs but double the size of forest. i will hold him and take a pic so you can see his size. beside forest.

this is Forest stretching her wings. you cant tell in the photos but all that gray under her wings are very shiny and metallic! she doesnt look anything like the farmers geese. I wonder if farmer got eggs mixed up and my wonderful daughter bird isnt some other mixed breed goose. =)
Oliver´s lovely. He looks like a Pilgrim gander to me. And dear little Forest has some strange stuff going on with her feathers anyway, maybe to do with her problem.
I can understand Forest being a little nervous, you just need to help her to see that he´s fine. ]the earlier you get them together the better for them both. You could always sit there with some goodies that Forest likes and feed them to Oliver. that way she should eventually choose to come over to you and him. Bit by bit.

Oh my word...I never knew that there was a goose site on here!
Anyway I have three broody geese (don't know when the eggs are due) that have a total of 18 eggs! I love goslings and I cant wait for them to hatch!

Scott (my vet) has made him a custom boot before. The tricky part is his foot changes shape due to procedures, frostbite issues, and evolution due to deformity, and unless the bottom is molded properly, it causes the wrong feet/leg muscles to be strained. Scott wants to him be barefoot as much as possible, but I will not be surprised if he puts Spirit back into a boot next weekend for a bit.
glad you have looked into it and have such an awesome vet. I wish i could find a specialist around here.

Thanks for replying! Since she bought the Oliver and the other goose I had for a night at the farm swap, I was reluctant to believe that they were what she thinks they are. I trust my friends on the forum much more. I have been spending lots of time out with Forest and Ollie (and the 4 ducks) she is getting better. I can tell that she doesnt look at him as her own species. She looks at him like he is another duck and when he talks in the cute gosling talk to her she looks very perplexed... almost like "how can he talk my language". I keep feeding them treats and Ollie tries to talk to Forest, he is at least interested in her. She will get there hopfully. I am just glad that he fit in so well with the ducks. They really like him and he is following them around like he is part of their flock.

What do you mean Forest's feathers being weird? If you are talking about her chest feathers being fluffy, I assume it is because she spends a few hours every day in the chair.

Do you mean something with her wing feathers?

any new pics of your babies? I want to see weekly growth pics!!

Andrea, what part of Florida are you in? Scott knows a few avian vets in Florida and I can get names from him. I'd also definitely check into UF as they have a wonderful teaching dvm hospital.
