Thats funny about people being afraid of geese more so than dogs. after being punched in the face by Forest flapping, i can imagine what a decent sized gander could do to someone that they wanted to hurt!

it's good you have people there that want them for something more than food. I dont think there is anything wrong with eating birds. growing your own food is much healthier. i just dont agree with treating an animal like a pet and then eating it.
after raising Forest, i know that birds can experience emotion much in the way human children do. maybe not as complex . but definitely comfort and trust.
I will never own a turkey because it is the only meat i eat (besides the occasional tuna). Saireth is so funny! he survives on chicken nuggets (i know, not the healthiest) He said to me a few months ago..."mama let's never get chickens" i asked him why and he said "because i will feel guilty every time I eat a chicken nugget"

the tub will have a wooden deck built around it above ground like people do with swimming pools so i can drain it from the bottom. too many live oak tree roots to dig into the ground.

That is a really good idea. Probably won't get as dirty as fast since they will not be able to just sit in the water, reach over the edge and grab a mouth full of mud and dump it in the water. There is an old claw-foot tub out in one of the barns...I might give that a try myself. Just have to figure how to do a ramp and deck that they won't fall off of.

That's the problem falling off. and yep they love to reach over the side while in the pool and grab whatever they can and dump it into the pool. Rocks, sticks, leaves, mud.

Very good looking fellow. Are Embden larger than Toulouse? We lucked out when we bought this place. There is a nice deep well and we are on the water shed side of a hill so our well recharges when it does rain. Also, the people that had the house before put faucets in all over the place. I have three out with my birds so saves my back. There is not so good also. The house is almost 100 years old, has 10 foot ceilings and we are so far out we depend on LPG. We learned last winter that LPG costs too much to use for heat so we had an insert put in the fireplace that blows heat out into the house. We have city water along with the well so it seems they could have run a natural gas line out here too.

So heating´s expensive, then. We don´t have heating of any sort other than an electric fan-heater that I use in the classroom on really cold evenings. It´s only cold for a week at a time, when the wind´s coming from the sea, then it turns and is warm again. Our water is free, all from the well, so living simply here is cheap. Other so-called 'luxury' goods are very expensive, though..cars computer, phone, etc.....
Shame they didn´t run a gas line at the same time to your house! At least you have water on hand, though. Do you have a wood burner? a lot of older out-in-the-sticks houses in England have them. So nice.

It´s only cold for a week at a time, when the wind´s coming from the sea, then it turns and is warm again. Our water is free, all from the well, so living simply here is cheap. Other so-called 'luxury' goods are very expensive, though..cars computer, phone, etc.....
Shame they didn´t run a gas line at the same time to your house! At least you have water on hand, though. Do you have a wood burner? a lot of older out-in-the-sticks houses in England have them. So nice.

We wouldn't be able to live here with out wood heat, I don't know how folks in cold climates pay for their heating. We've had wood stoves ever since we moved to these mountains 37 yrs ago. Not the same wood stove though. Thankfully we have been able to glean wood off our property and our neighbors property since they had their 144 acres logged a few years ago dh has been allowed to get wood from what the loggers left behind. So nice not to have to buy wood.

Oh and a side note. Now that i have the camera set up all 4 geese were in the pool and no mating took place, but the day is young. lol

Sounds like you live in a near perfect environment...I think I want to move there. Summers here can be un-godly hot, winters, while mostly mild, will always have 2 days to a week of sub freezing temps for the high. Spring and Fall tend to be perfect though...so maybe I only want to live where you live for half the year.

Can I bring my birds along?????

Where we lived in England, the heating would go on some time in October, depending on the weather, and we could turn it off again in around april, also depending on the weather..sometimes it´d be May. Here, we just put on more sweaters for a bit...so much better, we love it. This past winter we had one frost. It was a good one, burned all the grass! But during the day it gets back up to at least 60F, so not a big deal. My mom comes over from England to avoid the worst of the winter there. So, we´re really pleased to live here. I just hate the cold. It gets to around 100F for half of the year, but mostly it´s breezy here, so it´s quite bearable.

Well I didn't get it on camera because I had the camera too high and only got Sams head but I sat up there for a while today and Sammy would nibble on Toots the Buff and she'd get out of the pool then she would get back in and he'd start again then she would get out so i decided to do something else while the pool was filling and as soon as i got down off the hill Sam lets out the victory yell dh and I run to look up at the pool and Could only see 3 heads the Sammy, Toots and Babe. and although I didn't get it on camera yet[I moved the camera down ] for tomorrow I'm pretty sure it is Toots he is mating with because the whole time the 3 of them were in the pool it was Toots he was nibbling on not Babe.

So now the question if Sam has mated with Toots does that mean if Babe turns out to be a gander he is going to be left out? And since Sam has been mating with Toots will she begin to lay eggs soon.? This is so strange to be getting goose eggs this time of year but since J is getting them I'm thinking I may get some soon too. Toots and Babe are so young I didn't expect this till next Jan or Feb. I guess they are not gozzies anymore. I will say that Babe hasn't acted the least interested in any mating.
