Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Just livinbrazil and the magic desk lamp...what watt bulb do you use?
I use 60w, it´s easier to control the temperature.
I want to incubate goslings again since brazil is ahowing all her new hatched babies !

Can't wait!
Not long now!

That is hilarious, Makes me think of the Beverly Hillbilly's. I think you could probably get through the border.

We went to fetch our son from his friend´s house last night, an hour away from here, so it meant we´d be gone at least 3 hours. So I took the little one with me still in its egg. Stayed in my hand the whole time. That way I could keep an eye on it, keep the membrane damp. It hatched an hour after we got home, just after midnight. Just one more to go now, it´s ext pipped, so not long....
I´ll put the first two down with the goose later. They´re really big and strong.

andrea when i saod home i meant herding the flock home to their sleeping area near my my house
They were actually out a bit too far (5 fields away from their home field so they were bold it is heading towards winter so they can't go beyond the 3rd field.
In summer at the start when they have babies they usually stay in 1st and 2nd field but in middle of summer when the babies are bigger they go to the further fields which is 7 fields away and a long walk if flock is slow.the 5th field is 15 acres and long and that is when my fliers (crosses of geese and pure greylags) run and gain speed for flying and they fly high and land home and never had lost one. They only fly coz they are too lazy to walk

.Then i am stuck with the fat breeds and the chinese embden and crosses coz they will never fly
Wow!! You must have A LOT OF LAND! You didnt mention how you get the big flocks to move where you want them to go. Do you have herding dogs or something? I have a little chihuahua that follows me everywhere and my birds have gotten used to her near them. They dont like it but I think they have realized that she is half of their size and only wants to eat their food. I will have to take a pic for you guys the next time she is standing in the yard eating their food with them.

Looky what I got!!!!!!

Is that the infamous "lamp" =) it always scares me to see them right after they come out of the shell. i know it is inexperience. they always just look so fragile. that one your holding has the prettiest little orange beak! will it keep that black spot that is in the center? Your yard/field is beautiful! Even with the obvious lack of rain it looks so tropical!

It would be a nice trip. yes she is very good at hatching goslings.
It would be a super nice trip!! I have always wanted to go to Brazil! We should all go and meet at Livin's house for the weekend!

Okay livin we're planning our trip and that truck jtn has will hold us all. So now we have no excuse.

Yes, it is getting cold here so south of the equator would be nice. I might have to stay for a while and, of course, would have to take all 62 of my birds along with me.
I didnt know Tx got cold this time of year.... I have always pictured it as being warmer than Fl. but I guess it does get cold there. 62 birds! that is a lot of birds!

One reason I don't go anywhere and I only have 31 birds 5 dogs and 8 pond gold fish to take along.
I have never been able to go anywhere because of my dogs. My husband always complains about it. Well, he uses it for the excuse for us not to travel, we probably wouldnt go anywhere even if we didnt have animals =) My mother has always come over and let the dogs out but now that I have Forest, I wont be going anywhere for a while...until she is comfortable spending the day with the ducks and Ollie. I have been slowly leaving her outside longer and longer. It was great advice putting her in her own crate inside the run so no one can touch her. It has worked very well! I have been leaving her out there with Ollie and the scovie that loves her (Daisy). We have worked up to about 4 hours. She still scream/honks when we walk outside or come home letting me know that she has had enough of the great outdoors. She sounds like someone is stepping on her. It is an awful honk. I hope she grows out of that sound soon. Lydia, what other birds do you have besides the 4 geese?

I know what you mean though. One of us has to be home at all times. If we both go not only do we have to worry about the birds and their risks but the dogs would panic and just eat the house.
I have always wanted a motor home. I am too OCD to stay at other people's houses or in hotels. I cant sleep, am always too cold (we keep our house at 80 degrees) and have too many allergies to travel anyway. The only place I have ever had the desire to go is Brazil. The wildlife there is so awesome! @livininbrazil Do you get the capybaras? I would LOVE to have a capybara as a pet!

Here you go...and it comes with an inflatable duck pond...
Do you think they will let me across the border.

That is neat looking!

I would fit right into that ....seeing that I have a rooster in my living room =)

Silkie... so will you keep him in his own little penthouse?

I have been keeping Bruce Lee (Brucie the rooster) separated. when the ducks are out in the yard foraging, I put him in the fenced area attached to the duck run with the three BB bantam old english hens in a crate. They like to dig in the sand so the crate allows them to be near Bruce but not get eaten or pecked (they are so small). between 6-10 am Bruce is my living room in a crate. I havent decided what to do with him. I really enjoy having him crow (inside my house) and holding him because he is like a stuffed animal. I havent researched the breed enough to know if he can live as a solitary animal.....solitary being no hens to mate with. If I cant find any hens that he wont beat up or if I discover that his breed isnt happy being alone (like our ducks and geese) then I will probably re-home him since I dont think it is fair to keep an unhappy animal. The OEB hens will have a tractor built before the cold months (Jan-April). If I decide to keep Bruce, he will have his own separated section of the tractor.

The the only thing I dont like about Bruce is that his booted feet seem to always have poo stuck in the feathers.... I clipped his feathers back as short as I can and I wash him, but it seems he immediately walks through his poo.

I am no sure how to fix that.

Yes parts of Texas get pretty cold. Where we are it is mild most of the time (80 daytime 40 nights) but last winter, and they are predicting this winter, we had a week where the high only got to 19. Check out my Blog (link in signature) there is a picture of the hill outside my bedroom window completely frozen in ice. It was like a glass forest.

[ Lydia, what other birds do you have besides the 4 geese? ]

Andrea, I have 15 chickens actually 14 hens and 1 roo. mostly LF EE's Brahma, Black Australorp, my bantams are my roo who is game bantam, I have a Cochin frazzle bantam, and a game bantam hen and a lavender orpington bantam hen. When my LF hens go to chicken heaven { I could never eat them after they have given me eggs for so many years] I'll probably go back to bantams, I actually like the Cochin with the feathered feet, I have my Brahma hen inside last winter for a month treating her for bumble foot and I clipped her feathers back on her feet boy were they nasty from being outside. Not sure how to keep the roo from stepping in his poo though. They just seem to do it no matter what.

I also have 13 Muscovy's 9 ducks 4 drakes ..10.5 yrs down to 1.5 yrs old

I like bantams but let me tell you those bantam roos have an over population of hormones seems more so than LF breeds maybe it's just because they are so small and move so lightening fast. lol
