Goslings of 2015 Hatch-a-Long

He/she is alive and drinking. But he hasn't eaten yet and still can't walk. So I'm monitoring his progress closely.

He still has a hernia that I'm cleaning and putting Beta-dine on to try and prevent infection.
Watch the ducklings don't see his belly they may have a peck at it. eating usually takes 24 hrs and walking will most likely happen later today after it has had time to rest up. So precious. Congrats!!

This I do not understand. Everything was fine this a.m. when I let everyone out. The goose egg was still there in the nest and there was no change to behavior on anyones part. I just went out to check things and gather chicken and duck eggs. The nest is all torn up, the egg is outside the pen on the ground broken. All three geese are acting "normal" Sting hisses, the girls look at me expecting treats and no one seems to even notice the damage to the nest or the broken egg.

I know that nothing got in with them. Sting would have had a fit and the dogs would have gone crazy. So I can only think it was one or all of them. Do they ever just change their minds and say the hell with motherhood? Could one of the females had a jelouse fit and torn everything up?

Yesterday they were all working together to protect and "mother" the egg. What happened today?

Can you get a pic of his belly? The not walking or eating yet isnt much of a worry yet. The yolk sustains them for atleast 24 hrs and their legs arent as steady yet.

Gosh jtn sounds like a pred but just can't imagine after all you said. I guess maybe they got carried away. could the girls been having a disagreement? fighting over the nest? I haven't ever had anything like this happening so hopefully someone else can help ya out. I don't think your in for no broody this year it just wasn't meant to happen yet. I was telling my dh this afternoon after watching my 2 youngest they are still very dependent on the 2 adults even though they are mating, Don't get discouraged it's just beginning there is plenty of time. So maybe what your seeing is just immaturity in your 3?

That is what I am thinking also. Immature birds, they will be one year old on March 5th. Any predator would have to have made it through two fences and across the goose pen yard to just get to the door of the coop. It is really nice out today so all 7 dogs are outside. Even if it had been a flying predator of some sort the dogs and Sting would have made such a racket that God himself would have turned to take notice. Since they all three are acting so like the nest never existed I can only guess that for some reason they thought it was something in their coop that did not belong there and took matters into their own hands(wings). Can't imagine that one of them alone did it without the others reacting as well. Like you say, they are young and there is still plenty of time for them to do whatever they decide to do. If I had known this was going to happen I could have had an omelet, oh well.

And it would have been tasty too. There will be many more eggs though so you'll get your omelet yet.

Yep bet one went in and started messing around then the other 2 just couldn't resist helping next thing wallah egg on the ground.better than egg on the face I reckon . would have been interesting to see what their faces looked like when the egg cracked open did it look like any had been eaten or could you tell?

It might have been a skunk or something because ive had eggs disappear within 5 minutes and the eggs were eaten on the inside but the outside was just cracked open like a zipped egg

No, just out the door of the coop (a drop of about 4-6 inches...they have a ramp to go up and down). Cracked open and some of the white had run out but otherwise still intact. I thought about cooking it for the chickens but decided they had enough trouble with the geese without eating their egg. So, I just tossed it into the field next door. God only knows what it will attract tonight. Might end up being a noisy night with the dogs inside reacting to something outside.
