Got a visit from code enforcement

If you recieved a notifcation or citation from code compliance.... then you're in the wrong.

Not always, I know that here they cite people under codes that don't exist! and my neighbors have received citations and notifications for things that are not against the code.

OP: Do research before you say anything and always make sure that you have proof of what you claim.

does your municipality have a website? the code book might be online.

If it's worth it to you to keep them, then fight it. I would. Do your research, print everything you can and fight it. How sad that people cant simply live & let live. What is the issue bothering the person who reported you? The way it looks? The noise? The smell? Maybe those are issues that you can address one by one. Take pictures to court with you of your "pets" on your lap, your kids or grandkids playing with them... their nice coop, the distance of the coop to the houses nearby, etc. Some people just suck. Sorry this happened to you and I wish you the best of luck!

Yes... always. If you receive a citation from a city entity, you are in the wrong. City's dont issue citations to people who are following the law.

Whether or not the citation is actually valid is another question, and its up to the individual to prove it... as you've previously stated.

The people who work for the city are human, and can make mistakes like the rest of us. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that if you get a citation, the city thinks you aren't following the law. You may be following the law, but convincing the people who issued the citation that you are is a separate matter.

my family has been fighting this battle with the city for 2 years now.

They cite people under codes that do and never have existed. if they think that they can get away with it then they will do it.

They are human like the rest of us, but they do know the code better then the rest of us. if you have been cited do not assume that you are in the wrong and do not assume the code exists. they need to prove what they are doing just as much as you do.

OP: Is there a Sunshine law in your state?

Poulets de Cajun, you are 100% wrong. Cities have agendas, they have good ol' boys, they have ignoramuses and they have people with superiority complexes that just live to crush little people, along with all the good, normal employees that help run the city. Ask me how I know. I am the recipient of one of those campaigns by the city I kept my chickens in. I moved my chickens and will be suing the crap out of the city. I have the time and $ to do it. Their letters do not match up with their ordinaces. Period. I would rather move my birds out of their jurisdiction and then fight them, than deal with what I was up against and fight from an underdog situation. I am not posting the details here on BYC pages because of pending litigation, but trust me, you would flip your liver if you knew. I will PM you the details if you like, just not posting them here in BYC.

We can't afford a lawyer, but my cousin is a lawyer, my uncle is lawyer (won a case against the supreme court) and my sister is a paralegal, so we are filing everything without an official lawyer.

I would love to know the details of your case, maybe it will help us since we are going to court soon.

How much does the ignoramus position pay? I've been looking to leave the police dept and get out of dispatch for quite some time now.

It pays more than you can imagine, way too many people vying for the same position....especially in D.C. But that is another topic... I think I'll just get rid of the chickens for now and try to get something passed allowing the keeping of chickens in the future. I figure it will look better if I am compliant. In the meantime I'll keep some quail.

So, when the City gave me a parking ticket, whilst I was parked in my own paid for and assigned spot for my apartment building, and listed the parking address as being 15 blocks away, and the vehicle could not be driven, I was somehow in the wrong because the City is always right? That's really your argument?

City's issues citations to people following the law all the time, because some code enforcers are simply dicks with an attitude.
