got my chicks today.. and now they are dead.. GRAPHIC PICTURES

That is so sad. I would put hardwire cloth over the chicken wire. Also, you can spread sulphur (the powdered form around the brooder area and snakes will not slither across it. It burns thir tender belly skin. Problem is, you have to re-apply it if it rains.

i hope it wasnt someones escaped pet... cuz i wouldnt have wanted to kill someones pet snake.

anywase, my bite healed up fine, just a bit sore for a while, and red.

i made a new brooder already. and fixin up some more things around here.

will a snake that large go after my bigger chickens? like 13 week olds? or two week olds? i bought and used hardware wire. and looking for some more prevenative things.. i set out rat traps (i like rats alot though). and i put sulfer down, moth balls, and fake eggs/golf balls..

thanks guys.

i appreciate all of the sympathy. and im not sorry i killed the snake. (inless it is a boa or somthing like that..) but im pretty sure its a rat/chicken snake.

also. just so yall would know,, it really freaked me out,, but i killed it myself with my bare hands... thats not something i do.

i have never killed anthing on purpose before this.. i dont even like to kill bugs!

but he needed to go,, or he would have just came back and back.. and gotten... BIGGER! which is awful cuz thats a HUGE snake.

i hit him with a piece of wood that was on the ground. i drug him out of the coop by its tail, and threw him.. then he hid under a wood pile,, i picked up some wood and just kept smacking him..

i wanted to kill him really quickly, so that he wouldnt suffer. even though he is a snake, and killed my cute little baby chickens, i wanted him to go quick.

and. he was burried with the chicks under my tree in the back yard, with a brick on top of it.

Why in the world didnt you just cut its head off? Im shure it would rather be beated to death then go painlessly. NOT! It was in the snakes nature to find a meal so you cant be mad at him. IMHO the chicks should have been harder if not impossible to get at in the first place.

That looks a lot like a house snake.to us here looking at it.Sorry for your lose.Any body close have pet snakes?

Snakes are not evil, they are snakes. Just like any other creature that operates by instinct, they do what they are programmed to do, and that is to survive. Is it sad and disheartening that that survival sometimes causes us loss and pain? of course, but that doesn't change anything. If a poisonous snake can safely be relocated, it should be. If it is not a poisonous snake, reexamine the pen set up and think dime-size: if an opening is bigger than a dime, critters can and will find a way in, including snakes.

so sorry for your loss; I know your heart is aching and your emotions are in turmoil. :aww

I think house snake is a local common name. It looks a lot like a rat snake but I'm not a snake expert. I am sure (and it has been posted already I think) that it was not a boa or python.

I am so sorry..what di you do to the meen snake?
