Got my chooks microchipped today.

If you eat a chicken that is microchipped, isn't there a chance you could end up with the chip inside you instead? Then you could scan as a chicken.

I only microchip my dog because it seems pretty pointless for the rest. Noone is going to scan even the cats around here. The only time it would be useful is if you find who stole your animals and then have issues proving they were yours. Odds are low that would happen. I don't think it justifies the time and cost. Even for my dog I put a tag on her harness that says she's microchipped with her number and the company to call so if someone finds her they can just call up and get not only my contact info but backup contact info, 4 other people to contact, and all her shot records in one without having to get her scanned by someone. The chip is just a backup for that very rare event that she might escape with no ID on her and end up somewhere that someone would scan her.

Is it still illegal to chip animals who are intended for food? It used to be, at least here.

All our dogs are microchipped, but horses are just freeze-branded.

I fear it's just a matter of time until RFID is "required" for humans. I can just see it.

I did my horses, dogs, my finches and my goldfish. You never know who's lurking around watching for the opportunity.
