Continuing the build out, laid out a bunch of river stone to go under the chip mulch so there would never be water pooling up against the run frame as there’s a slight slope away from the house and deck.
Gives the water a nice path out.
Chicken tending/tv chair in use with one of our Jersey giants!

So, the gentleman who’d bought my house, and with it the old coop, tore down the roof of the run you can see in the op. Unfortunately that left a couple nail holes through the shingles…
Give it 7 years of rain and snow…. And this was the result.

First good storm down here and we had water seeping through the insulation. Everything soaked. 😨

Tearing the roof down took me longer than expected, and I didn’t fully prep the new plywood… whoops…

I hit it with two coats of deck paint just for extra protection.

We also slipped up and measured with the shingles on so we couldn’t see how wide the roof frame was, so I had to rip the plywood with a skill saw, some 2x4s and clamps. Oh. And the sun was going down and the chickens were screaming to get inside 😂😂😂

I got the plywood screwed down just as it got dark and crossed my fingers for no rain!

Got the roof handled! First time roofing in a decade, not quite a pro but I’d say it’ll do! Chickens approved!

an automatic door is a must have imo and my favorite by far is the Pullet Shut (amazing name) I bought from chickendoors.com. I purchased it in 2015!!! I’m still using the original battery, which is incredible.

The whole door sat largely exposed to the elements for 7 years, disconnected from power.

I had charged the battery up inside and ran it off that for a short time while I waited for my solar setup to arrive.

15W panel is overkill for the amount of power used daily by the door but I can also hook up and charge usb devices or exterior lights if I want.

Now both cameras and the door are all solar powered. I am going to do some wire management in the future and clean that rats nest up.

The dogs love the birds btw and enjoy hanging around and standing watch for them. One of the barred rocks chased our golden away from some treat the other day, it was hilarious.

The white chicken, kids named kiwi, is one of our favorites and unfortunately we discovered from fine folks here… is a cockerel (along with one of my barred rocks 😥)
