Got my "Employee Review" Back today....

As a manager/supervisor I've done employee reviews for many years. I have never seen anything like yours.

I don't even understand the format. Did they get a question like "What do you think of Peggy?" and those were the responses?

I can't imagine ANY place of business that would take ANY opinions from co-workers and put them in a review whether they were anonymous or not. An employee review is to be done by a supervisor - period.

I've worked for both big corporations and small businesses and I have never seen ANYTHING like this. I'm just shocked and shaking my head.

X3! Your work review should be conducted, written and delivered by a manager or other person in charge. To collect random, annonymous comments from your co-workers and hand that off to your as your work "review" is ridiculous! I have never experienced that kind of "review"! Personally, I would be having a chat with whoever is at the top about these so called reviews and see if you can be instrumental in maybe getting something a little more constructive put into place for employee work reviews! You never know, if you are professional and well spoken enough about it YOU might get promoted to manager! Sounds like the place needs a good one!

I agree and my dad was a manager of Xerox Corporation (copy machines) and they have dress and performance reviews BY the supervisor, NOT them co workers or "peons". It is very demoralizing, that is for sure.

While I agree that showing you the comments was inappropriate , I didn't see anything in them that was even coming close to bad. Based on these comments, I'm assuming you got a hefty raise. Coupled with the other comments, even the "dingy" comment served to paint you as someone it was a pleasure to work with.

Get another job. The fact that you work in a mental health facility and all those mental health professionals can't figure out that this form of evaluation of performance is ineffective at best and mentally damaging to employees at worst is scary. I guess the ones running the facility need more mental health intervention than the patients. Good luck. By the way, It sounds like you are attractive and they are ugly and jealous..

Having been on both sides of the desk over the years I never cease to be amazed when I see this type of evaluation in use. While most of the comments are harmless, albeit worthless for employee evaluation, the "dingy"comment is a serious concern. Little stabs like this can keep you from getting another job in the future(I've been there, believe me) or affect your present job sometime later if there are major management changes. Labor Board hearings have been held for seemingly small comments like this. Request this comment be stricken from your records and if they refuse, follow the chain of command until it is.

I'm not one to make a "mountain out of a molehill" but this just burns my backside when I see such unprofessional actions when dealing with a persons livelyhood and future!

I just reread your review. It is really 38 positive and 2 nut jobs. Let it go, it is not a negative reflection on you. You just work with two mean (or stupid) people. It is almost impossible to get 38 out of 40 people to say positive things, you should be proud. If you looked at this as an average you would have scored 95% which would be an 'A". Plus, the two "bad" comments are not really that bad because no one else supported them. Again, just two nut jobs.

Sounds like you may work in the Sacramento area. I work for a gigantic world wide corporation in the same area. They use the peer review method for all employees from other employees selected by your supervisor. The "bosses" and upperlings also get to put in their 2 cents. The only difference is that all those who have been asked to comment must fill out a 5 page electronic questionnaire containing approximately 30 meaningful and objective questions; the supervisor knows who they are because they pick them out. The supervisor cannot tell me who commented, but she is awesome and I can pretty much guess who is saying what and she will let me know with a look if I guess right. There are always those who will complain when they can't control you and those who think they are better than you, I wouldn't worry about the sad folks to don't know how to comment constructively. It means nothing in the scheme of things. When mean things are said about you, the only reaction to have is to suspect everyone; not a very good feeling. I would drop it and just do the best job at what you do.

What is wrong with 'standing out by your appearance'? I don't understand when it became improper for a man or woman to dress 'nicely'.

I was referring to dressing appropriately; standing out is not necessarily good. For example, if you are a dog groomer, you wear clothing where movement is easy & cleaning it is not an issue; not a dress suit. If you are a sales clerk in a department store, you wear fashionable clothing, not your favourite very casual jeans and tee-shirt. If you work in a business office, you wear business attire, not beach attire.

Thanks guys :) I think I can pick out one of the two people who said those things about me.

There is one staff (we'll call her Shirley) who truly HATES me because, long story short, I am firm with certain rules. Our facility is separated into 4 separate "houses", and each of those houses has to grocery shop weekly. The costco card is in my office, and I am responsible for distributing it and keeping track of it. One of my rules is that the card MUST come back to me between each use. The staff may not pass it along to each other. This is because I must keep track of it, and if it goes missing I am the one who has to answer for it. If I can't even tell my manager who had it last, how does that look? Not good.

Well, basically, another staff already had the card and "Shirley" wanted it. I told her that I was sorry, but that someone else (We'll call her Jenny) was in line for the card ahead of her, but that I would call her when it was her turn and that she could take it then. I specified that she was NOT to get the card from the staff that currently had it because "Jenny" was waiting ahead of her. Well, "Shirley" contacted the other staff anyways, took the card, used it, and then had the cajones to bring it back to me and turn it in. To make things worse, "Shirley" contacted "Jenny" and GLOATED. So of course Jenny calls me, frantic and mad as ****. By the time "Shirley" gets to the office she is already on the defense. There were several people around, so I very quietly told her that she shouldn't have done that, and that the card was supposed to have gone to "Jenny". At this "Shirley" decides to get loud. Bobbing her head back and forth, waving her hands around and yelling "I don't see what the freaking problem is!" and a few other choice phrases. At first I was a little taken aback, but I recovered and said (in a normal voice this time), "The problem, Shirley, is that I SPECIFICALLY told you not to do that, I gave you a solid reason why, and you did it anyways. THAT is what the problem is." At this point everyone, including our supervisor, was looking at us. Once she realized this she became very contrite and apologized, but she has despised me ever since. I don't like her much either to be honest.

As for going to my supervisor about the review. I am not really sure what good that will do. My family actually owns the company. My supervisor didn't actually give my review sheet to me, my dad did. And my dad is several steps higher than my supervisor on the company ladder. He did say "Read with caution" when he handed it to me. I don't know if everyone got their review sheets back, or if my dad just wanted to show me mine? I know that I have never seen one before, and I have been working there for almost 3 years. I just changed positions in this last quarter, so maybe he wanted to give me some feedback on how I am doing?
