Got My FIRST eggs today!!

Longlegz,

Congratulations! May I ask how old the girls who started laying are? I'm in my 16th week with my small flock. No big signs yet,, but combs and waddles starting to grow a bit and get a bit redder. I still have the nest boxes closed off,,

Did you see any signs, squatting, egg song, etc?

Thanks!

I am going to GUESS 20 weeks... I wasnt told how old when I bought them..... Yes... saw squatting...and the rooster trying to get a piggy back ride lol... Plus the combs/face got alot redder! I would go ahead and open up the boxes....I put a Golf Ball in there so they knew where to lay at. I would block it back off at night... mine like to sleep and poop in there. It gets nasty but I clean them alot.

Oh fun! Gotta love the first egg!! I have some barred rocks and Australourps.. They were hatched June 9th. How old are your girls? I'm waiting for these girls to get on board with some egg laying as well.
Yours should start laying at anytime!! Do the golf ball trick in the nest so they knew where to lay! Mine only lay in one box because I only have one ball LOL Good luck and keep your eye out!

Be excited girl!!!! Don't stop! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

Mine have had so many changes in the past month they've stopped **** laying. Just an egg or two here and there.

Hopefully all of the dynamics in my flock get worked out soon so they can get back to business. I saw my teeny bantam cochin in the box today - maybe - just maybe she's going to soon.

How old are yours? They should lay around 5 months old.... Hopefully soon! :)
Oh, they are about 6 months. I ask them ever so nicely every day to lay me an egg.
But they just squawk and look for handouts. They don't care about the nest, they don't care about the golf balls. They only like to roll around in the dirt.

I'm trying to get them to learn to roost, but that is a losing battle. The alpha, a BR, doesn't like to jump up on things, so I put her up, but her girlfriend, a faux-aracauna, will only jump up if she's up there.

Maybe I should just leave them alone to do whatever they want.

I would leave the golfballs in there anyways..... They will do it when they are ready. I still have 7 that need to start laying. Im just happy that 2 are going as of now lol

Longlegz,

How is your RIR Roo? I have heard they can be quite moody Roo's, and even aggressive at times? Does that apply to your guy?
