Got My First Marans Egg Today

Quote:
This was the first egg from Helen, my cuckoo marans. It's 1.4 ounces, 1.5 inches wide and 2 inches long. The other six she has laid since then have all been the same size and coloring with some very light speckling. I'm crossing my fingers they'll get bigger.

Very nice! I was curious to see how dark it would be. Someone said they were disappointed because their eggs weren't as dark as they had hoped.

My avatar is my first Marans egg beside a RIR egg. A got another one yesterday. I assume from my other Marans. It was as dark but shaped totally different. They are peculiar. All my other hens use the same box but my Marans uses different one.

Beautiful!!! Agnes finally did the squat for me this evening, so I am hoping we will have an egg from her by the weekend.

Those are beautiful and the very reason I wanted Marans! Our girls are 22 weeks today, no eggs yet, but I am trying to be patient. Enjoy those gorgeous eggs!

Thank you LT, I've been patiently (or not!) awaiting my first eggs. Have you posted a pic of your Marans? I would love to see them. I can NOT wait to see the BCMs eggs. Hopefully just a couple more weeks. They are supposed to be the same age as the Cuckoos but I have a feeling that the Cuckoos are actually a week or two older than what the breeder told me or the BCMs are a week or two younger. If the BCMs eggs are just a couple of shades darker than the Cuckoos, I'll be tickled pink

Here is Agnes. She is the smaller of the two but the one who squatted for me today. And honestly, I have not been patient AT ALL. We have 9 girls and only one of them is laying. She has been laying for almost 4 weeks now. I keep telling the other girls they aren't "pulling their weight" but nothing has worked. Fingers crossed though.

See, this is what I mean.... How can mine only be 20 weeks? This is my first time with Cuckoo Marans so I don't have anything to compare to or reference..

Mine look much older than yours, don't you think?? Your Pullet is beautiful!! Here's my Cuckoo roo. Twice as big as the BCM roo, but still second in command

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, I know I wore a path from the back door to the cardboard nest box I had at first! Be sure to keep us posted

Congrats on your first chocolate egg. Trying to add BCM's to my flock....just had 10 eggs, none of them hatched, several rotted and exploded and the one that was viable I killed by accident....heartbreaking to me. Not giving up though. Have more eggs arriving Friday. Wish me luck!

Congratulations on the eggs! I love the look of my Marans' eggs. The cuckoo eggs aren't as dark, but they put lots of bloom and shine on, so they really keep well.

My Marans are really great layers. Five days a week, when they are at it. What blows their average is they are a broody bunch. I really can't complain - I broke my young BCM hen easily, and she is back laying. My cuckoo is such a good broody I just give her eggs and let her raise them. She is a great mother, and the chicks wind up well tamed. Her first lesson is to teach them where treats come from
