Got my first predator

We have five Red Star hens that have been laying for a couple of months. We have just now started to get an egg a day from each of them. Well Wednesday we got three eggs and Thursday we did not get any. Friday we got a snake in the nesting box. My wife went to the coop and discovered the Chicken Snake, she freaked. She came inside and told me about the snake and I immediately thought, that sucker ate five eggs yesterday. I grabbed the camera and went to investigate; sure enough there he was with an egg 3/4ths swallowed. When I tried to get a picture it spit the egg out and tried to escape. I grabbed him and held him for my wife to take a few pictures. I re-homed him across the road a good distance away.

I get the shivers just looking at that snake...ugh...nice catch.

Re homed? not far enough. you need to put a couple miles between you and him. he'll be back very soon. in the mean time try and figure out where he got in.

I love all wildlife, I especially like seeing snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs and toads all on my small suburban lot in a big metro area. Tells me I'm doing something right if that diversity can live here.

Awe what a beautiful snake! But I agree, just across the road is not at all far enough to rehome a snake. It needs to be taken across town. lol!
