Got my flat panel coop heater!

SoCal isn't ALL sunshine and beaches. We had snow and ice with temps into the mid teens with the wind chill earlier this week. DH put in a 250 watt heat lamp over their roosts and the roos got their combs all vaselined up. The temp in the coop was in the 40s! Now if I can figure out a way to keep their outside water liquid....(DH is tired of dumping a big ice cube each morning).

I'll have to show him that wall unit! He'll like it!

I agree .... that is a very nice heater. You say it was 40s in your coop? That is like plenty warm for chickens. Really, they will be okay. Like I said, it is only 9* here right now, and my chicks are fine outside, with the heat lamps.

I was actually looking at one of those in the Improvements catalog, and wondering if it was a better heat system than het lamps. Not that I need one, but I read about so mant fires each year that I was gonna post a pic of these but forgot. Let us know how it goes

This morning I woke up to a chilly -11 wind chill here in Northern Indiana. Our chicks have a wall mounted heater with roosts in front of it. They finally found those roosts the last couple of nights. Seems some still like roosting in front of open south windows. I think chickens are find in any weather. I've read posts on hear from Alaska. So I think chickens are alot tougher that we give them credit for. They have better istullation that my house!!! Maybe that a new product waiting to happen. Feather home insullation. I'm rich!!!

BTW: We are shutting the open windows tonight with plywood to help with our record cold winter comming.

I do not have any heat on them during the day as they are usually out in the run anyway.

I understand they will be fine if fully feathered out but I just don't want to take any chances with these light Susssex chicks. Plus, some are a little younger than others.

Hope you find a solution. They make us worry, don't they?

I read an interesting post once regarding chcikens and freezing cold weather. The posted commented "Maybe they CAN tolerate it but should they HAVE to? That is sort of the approach I am taking. Now when this subfreezing cold front passes I am going to use my thermostat cube that turns it on at 35 degrees and off at 45 degrees. I don't want them basking in the Florida sun, I just want them comfortable and happy. I hate to be cold more than anything. My husband accuses me of attributing human emotions to animals. I am just a softy.

I put heat in my Wee ones playhouse coop. I still have the brooder tote in side the playhouse. I changed the bulb from 100 watt to a 60 watt. with the lid on the tote propped up about 5" I have been able to maintain 55 to 60 degrees in there. I just have to really watch the water. The container was dry this morning. I thought 1/4 full in a fruit jar type water would be enough for 6 chicks overnight. Not! I will make sure it is full as long as I have heat in the tote. My big kids are doing fine and have a choose of getting in there hutches or sleeping on the roosts in the covered pen. I watch the temp in both areas as I don't want my flock to be stressed with cold.
