Got my Great Pyrenees today!

Which breed did you get?

I have heard that it takes 18-24 months for the dog to mature and stop being the doggie version of a bullheaded teenager. So maybe it is just a matter of time for you.
Cute..Finn actually will not walk,on leash or do anything we want..He chooses his day. Vet comes here to vaccinate him. 150lbs..

chickens really and her Big Bird protector...:wee

I got a Great Pyrenees and he probably would've been OK with the chickens if I did not make the mistake of getting another puppy (mix breed pit bull/lab) to keep him company.

The two of them were good until they got a little older and the chicken was a toy to chase and they ganged up on them. I was able to let them loose at night when all the chickens roosted until one night a hen came down in the dark and they injured her so badly chewing on her back she didn't make it.

The Pyrenees came from a working sheep farm and he was not human socialized. It took months for him to enjoy human company and he still is very independent and won't walk on a leash unless he wants to and has to be carried by sling into the vets office. He lays flat out and refuses to walk. The breed is very sweet but they don't seem to crave human approval like other dogs they can take us or leave us either way they are fine. My lab mix is such a mama's boy has been since day one seeking my approval.

Oh, that is less than I expected. That makes it easier

I want them to know heel, come, down, and leave it. Everything else is optional. Any tips on that and going easy the first year?

"Leave it!". This is a command that will serve you well with your pups... It is not punitive, can be generalized to all sorts of things. Once they learn "leave it" you can introduce them to the chicks, on leash of course. "Leave it" when they get excited, constant praise when they are calm and watching. Worked with our Catahoula (herding dog, high energy, protective but high prey drive as well.

The ranchers who have grazing rights to the BLM acreage adjacent to our property run 5 bands of sheep over a lot of acreage. They work various herding dogs and two Pyranees. These guys are outside 24/7, they are not pets. Their job is to keep coyotes and mountain lions off the sheep. When the sheep are being moved, it's the Border Collies, Heelers and Aussies that do the work, assisting the shepherds.
The breed is good at what they do.
